Oppression puts an end to blessings.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "البغي يزيل النعم" which translates to

Oppression puts an end to blessings.

This impactful Hadith holds great significance and can be understood in light of the teachings of the Quran.

The word (al-baghi) "البغي" refers to oppression, transgression, or injustice. It encompasses any act of wrongdoing, whether it is against oneself or others. This includes violating the rights of others, usurping their property, or causing harm in any form. The word (yazeel) "يزيل" means to remove, eliminate, or put an end to. And the word (an-ni'ma) "النعم" refers to blessings, favors, or bounties bestowed upon an individual by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 25:

And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty.

This verse highlights the consequences of oppression and transgression. It warns that a trial or punishment will not only affect the wrongdoers but may also extend to others. It serves as a reminder that oppression has far-reaching consequences and can lead to the removal of blessings from not only the oppressors but also those around them.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 56, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding corruption and oppression after a period of reformation. It highlights the need to maintain righteousness and justice to preserve the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By engaging in oppression, we risk losing the nearness of Allah's mercy and the continuation of His blessings.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to uphold justice, fairness, and compassion in all aspects of life. When we oppress others, we disrupt the harmony and balance that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has established in His creation. This disruption can lead to the removal of blessings from our lives.

For example, if a person unjustly seizes the property of others, they may experience a loss of wealth or face difficulties in their financial affairs. If someone oppresses their family members, they may witness strained relationships and a lack of harmony within their household. Similarly, if a leader oppresses their subjects, they may face rebellion, unrest, and loss of support from the people they govern. These are just a few examples of how oppression can lead to the removal of blessings in various aspects of life.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of self-reflection and accountability. It urges Muslims to examine their own actions and ensure that they are not engaging in any form of oppression or injustice. By doing so, we can strive to maintain the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and create an environment of peace, justice, and prosperity for ourselves and those around us.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

Oppression puts an end to blessings

serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to abstain from all forms of oppression and injustice. It teaches us that by engaging in oppression, we risk losing the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). To maintain these blessings, we must strive to uphold justice, fairness, and compassion in all aspects of our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be just and righteous individuals and protect us from the consequences of oppression.
