اَلعَدْلُ أقْوى أساس۔
Justice is the strongest foundation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العدل أقوى أساس" which translates to
Justice is the strongest foundation.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense importance of justice in our lives as Muslims.
The word (al-'adl) "العدل" refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It encompasses the idea of treating others with equality and ensuring that everyone receives their due rights. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, emphasized in both the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice in the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse clearly highlights the obligation of Muslims to establish justice and settle disputes in a fair and equitable manner. It also emphasizes the importance of standing against oppression and striving for justice even if it means confronting those who oppress.
Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), where Allah says,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice even if it goes against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that Allah is the ultimate judge and that we should not let our personal biases or desires hinder our pursuit of justice.
Imam Ali's statement,
Justice is the strongest foundation,
serves as a reminder to Muslims of the significance of justice in all aspects of our lives. It is not only about establishing justice in society but also about embodying justice in our personal conduct, relationships, and decision-making.
When justice is upheld, it leads to harmony, peace, and the well-being of individuals and communities. Conversely, when justice is neglected or compromised, it gives rise to oppression, inequality, and social unrest. Therefore, justice is not only a moral obligation but also a means to establish a just and equitable society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep understanding of justice and his unwavering commitment to upholding it. His knowledge, wisdom, and exemplary conduct serve as a role model for Muslims to strive for justice in all aspects of their lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Justice is the strongest foundation
reminds us of the paramount importance of justice in Islam. It calls upon Muslims to establish justice in society, stand against oppression, and embody justice in their personal lives. By upholding justice, we contribute to the betterment of ourselves, our communities, and the world at large. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all in our pursuit of justice and grant us the ability to establish it in our lives.
