Hadith #6411

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "جَمالُ العَبْدِ الطّاعَةُ", which translates to

The beauty of a servant is [in his] obedience.

This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the significance of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as a means of attaining beauty and excellence in the sight of our Creator.

Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith by exploring the key words and concepts within it. Firstly, the word (beauty) "جَمالُ" refers to an aesthetic quality that is pleasing and attractive. It signifies an inner and outer beauty that encompasses righteousness, virtue, and moral excellence. Secondly, the term (a servant) "العَبْدِ" refers to a person who willingly submits themselves to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and recognizes their role as a humble servant in the grand scheme of creation. Lastly, (obedience) "الطّاعَةُ" refers to the act of submitting to the commands and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as revealed in the Quran and exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

To further understand the significance of obedience as a source of beauty, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:112),

Indeed, those who submit themselves willingly to Allah and are righteous, they will have their reward with their Lord. And there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

This verse highlights that true beauty lies in the submission to Allah's commands and the adherence to righteousness. It is through obedience that one attains the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the ultimate reward in the Hereafter.

Additionally, the Quran emphasizes the importance of obedience in Surah Al-Imran (3:31), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'

This verse highlights the inseparable connection between love for Allah and obedience to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). By following the example of the Prophet (ﷺ) and obeying his teachings, Muslims demonstrate their love for Allah and seek His love and forgiveness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in this Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in their daily lives. It reminds us that true beauty is not merely confined to physical appearances, but rather lies in the obedience to our Creator.
