(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ عَدَلَ عَظُمَ قَدْرُهُ۔

This can be translated as,

The status of one who is just becomes great.

In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance and elevated position of justice.

The word (adala) "عَدَلَ" in this Hadith refers to justice, fairness, and righteousness. It signifies the act of treating others with equity, impartiality, and honesty. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, and it is a quality that is highly praised and encouraged in the Quran.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9),

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse emphasizes the importance of justice in resolving conflicts and disputes among believers. It highlights the obligation to establish justice and fairness in all matters, even in times of conflict. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) loves those who act justly and treats others with fairness.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against one's personal interests or the interests of loved ones. It highlights the need to be impartial and truthful in bearing witness and testifying, regardless of the consequences. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us that He is aware of our actions and intentions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in his Hadith, emphasizes that the status of a person who upholds justice becomes great. This means that justice is not only a moral obligation but also a means of elevating one's status and attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When a person consistently practices justice in their actions, they gain the respect and admiration of others, and their character becomes a shining example for others to follow.

Moreover, the consequences of justice are far-reaching. When justice is upheld, it leads to social harmony, peace, and stability. It ensures that everyone's rights are protected and that no one is oppressed or marginalized. Justice is the foundation of a just and equitable society, where individuals can thrive and fulfill their potential.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of justice in our daily lives. We should strive to be just in our dealings with others, whether it is in our personal relationships, our professional lives, or our interactions within the wider society. By embodying the principles of justice, we can contribute to the betterment of our communities and the establishment of a just and compassionate society.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to uphold justice and grant us the ability to act with fairness and righteousness in all aspects of our lives.
