ثَلاثٌ هُنَّ المُحْرِقاتُ المُوبِقاتُ: فَقْرٌ بَعْدَ غِنىً، وذُلٌّ بَعْدَ عِزّ، وفَقْدُ الأحِبَّةِ۔
Three things break one’s spirit and cause downfall: poverty after wealth, humiliation after dignity and loss of loved ones.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Causes Of Downfall And Ruin)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights three destructive elements that can break a person's spirit and lead to their downfall. The first element mentioned is poverty after wealth (فَقْرٌ بَعْدَ غِنىً). This refers to the unfortunate situation where a person experiences a sudden loss of wealth or a significant decrease in their financial status.
The second element mentioned is humiliation after dignity (ذُلٌّ بَعْدَ عِزّ). This refers to the loss of honor and respect that one may have enjoyed previously. It could be a result of various factors such as a fall from a position of power, being subjected to humiliation or disrespect, or experiencing a decline in social status.
The third element mentioned is the loss of loved ones (فَقْدُ الأحِبَّةِ). This refers to the pain and grief that one experiences upon the death or separation from their loved ones. Losing someone dear to us can have a profound impact on our emotional well-being and can lead to a sense of emptiness and despair.
To understand the significance of these three elements, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20) that worldly possessions and wealth are temporary and can easily be lost. He says,
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
In Surah An-Nisa (4:141), Allah warns us about the consequences of humiliation and disgrace. He says,
Those who wait [and watch] you. Then if you gain a victory from Allah, they say, 'Were we not with you?' But if the disbelievers have a success, they say [to them], 'Did we not gain the advantage over you, but we protected you from the believers?' Allah will judge between [all of] you on the Day of Resurrection, and never will Allah give the disbelievers over the believers a way [to overcome them].
Regarding the loss of loved ones, the Quran provides solace and comfort. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:156), Allah says,
Who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.'
This verse reminds us that death is a natural part of life, and it is through the acceptance of Allah's decree that we find strength and resilience in times of grief.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful words serve as a reminder to Muslims of the potential challenges that can test our faith and resilience. They highlight the importance of maintaining gratitude and humility during times of prosperity, as well as the need to remain steadfast and patient during times of adversity.
For instance, if a person becomes wealthy, they should not become arrogant or forgetful of the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah. They should use their wealth to benefit others, fulfill their obligations towards Allah, and remain humble in their interactions with others. This will protect them from the spiritual downfall that can result from the arrogance and heedlessness that often accompany wealth.
Similarly, if a person experiences a decline in their financial status, they should remember that wealth is a temporary provision from Allah and that their true worth lies in their faith and character. They should seek solace in the remembrance of Allah and find contentment in the blessings that remain in their life, such as good health, supportive relationships, and the opportunity for spiritual growth.
In times of humiliation and disgrace, Muslims should remember that their honor and dignity lie in their submission to Allah and adherence to His commands. They should not compromise their principles or engage in actions that would tarnish their reputation. Instead, they should find strength in their faith and seek Allah's guidance and protection.
Lastly, when faced with the loss of loved ones, Muslims should turn to Allah for comfort and solace. They should remember that death is a natural part of life and that the separation from loved ones is temporary. They should seek solace in the remembrance of Allah, the recitation of the Quran, and the support of their community. They should also strive to honor the memory of their loved ones by living a life that is pleasing to Allah and by engaging in acts of charity and kindness in their name.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to remain steadfast in the face of challenges and to seek strength and guidance from Allah during times of prosperity, adversity, and loss. It emphasizes the importance of gratitude, humility, and patience in maintaining one's spiritual well-being and avoiding the pitfalls that can lead to a person's downfall. May Allah protect us from these destructive elements and grant us the strength to navigate the trials of life with faith and resilience.
