Forbearance is the symbol of excellence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forbearance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-Hilmu 'unwānul fadl." This beautiful saying can be translated as
Forbearance is the symbol of excellence.
In order to understand the essence behind this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their significance.
Firstly, let us explore the word "hilm" which means forbearance or patience. Hilm is the ability to remain calm and composed in the face of adversity, to control one's anger and emotions, and to respond to challenging situations with wisdom and restraint. It is an essential virtue that enables an individual to maintain peace and harmony in their interactions with others.
The word "unwān" means symbol or emblem. It refers to something that represents or signifies a particular quality or characteristic. In this context, unwān signifies that forbearance is not only a praiseworthy trait, but it is also a distinguishing mark of excellence and virtue.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of forbearance and patience in various verses.
In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah says,
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the connection between patience and seeking Allah's assistance. It reminds us that through patience, we can find strength and support from our Creator.
In Surah Al-Imran (3:186), Allah assures us,
You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination.
This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are a part of life, and patience is key to enduring them with faith and righteousness.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nahl (16:125), Allah instructs us,
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.
This verse highlights the importance of using wisdom and good manners when conveying the message of Islam. Forbearance plays a crucial role in engaging in dialogue and discussions with others, as it allows us to maintain respect and understanding, even in the face of differing opinions.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we can understand that forbearance is not only a commendable quality, but it is also a characteristic that distinguishes the truly excellent individuals. It is through forbearance that we can navigate the challenges of life, maintain harmonious relationships, and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the virtue of forbearance throughout his life. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, he remained patient and composed, even in the most difficult circumstances. His forbearance was not a sign of weakness, but rather a manifestation of his strength and faith.
As Muslims, we should strive to emulate the example set by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and cultivate the virtue of forbearance in our own lives. By doing so, we can enhance our relationships, promote peace and harmony within our communities, and ultimately attain excellence in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to embody the virtue of forbearance and may He bless us with His mercy and guidance.
