Hadith #1944

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الجاهِلُ مَيِّتٌ وإنْ كانَ حَيّاً۔

This can be translated as,

An ignorant person is dead, even when he is alive.

To understand the essence of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words used. The word (jahil) "جاهِلُ" refers to an ignorant person, someone lacking knowledge or understanding. The word (mayyit) "مَيِّتٌ" means dead or lifeless. And the word (hayyan) "حَيّاً" means alive or living.

This Hadith highlights the spiritual death that ignorance brings upon an individual. It emphasizes that mere physical existence does not equate to true life. In the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), a person who lacks knowledge and understanding is spiritually dead, even if they are physically alive.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
