ثَمَرةُ العِلْمِ العِبادَةُ۔
The fruit of knowledge is worship.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "ثَمَرةُ العِلْمِ العِبادَةُ۔" This translates to
The fruit of knowledge is worship.
In this beautiful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the inseparable connection between knowledge and worship.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (thamara) "ثَمَرَةُ" means "fruit" or "result." It signifies the outcome or consequence of something. (al-'ilm) "العِلْمِ" refers to knowledge, which encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. And finally, (al-'ibadah) "العِبادَةُ" means worship, which includes acts of devotion and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and its connection to worship. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. It implies that knowledge is a means to elevate oneself in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of spiritual elevation and honor in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through knowledge that believers are elevated in their ranks and rewarded.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. Knowledge is not merely an intellectual pursuit; it is a means to attain closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through worship. When we acquire knowledge, it should lead us to recognize our Creator, understand His commandments, and fulfill our obligations towards Him. Knowledge should inspire us to worship Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with sincerity and devotion.
For example, when we learn about the importance of prayer, the significance of fasting, or the virtues of charity, our knowledge should motivate us to engage in these acts of worship. Knowledge should not remain confined to our minds; it should manifest in our actions and transform us into better Muslims.
Moreover, knowledge enables us to worship Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the best possible manner. It helps us understand the intricacies of the Islamic faith, the wisdom behind the rituals, and the deeper meanings of the Quranic verses. With knowledge, we can perform our acts of worship with greater understanding, sincerity, and excellence.
Conversely, without knowledge, our worship may lack depth and purpose. We may engage in rituals without truly comprehending their significance or adhering to the teachings of Islam. Knowledge serves as a guiding light that illuminates our path towards true worship and righteousness.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the inseparable connection between knowledge and worship. Knowledge is not an end in itself; rather, it is a means to attain closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through sincere and devoted worship. Let us strive to acquire knowledge and let it bear fruit in our lives by inspiring us to worship Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with understanding, sincerity, and excellence. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to seek knowledge and worship Him in the best possible manner.
