Hadith #5282

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

شُكْرُ النِعَّمِ عِصْمَةٌ مِنَ النِّقَمِ۔

This can be translated as,

Showing gratitude for blessings is a protection from adversities.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this amazing Hadith in light of the Quranic teachings. The word (shukr) "شُكْرُ" refers to expressing gratitude and appreciation for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is an act of acknowledging and recognizing the favors and bounties that Allah has bestowed upon us. The word (ni'am) "نِعَّمِ" refers to these blessings or favors themselves.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Naml, Allah says, (Quran 27:19)

And [Solomon] smiled, amused at her speech, and said, 'My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants.'

Here, Prophet Solomon (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expresses gratitude for the favors bestowed upon him and his parents. This verse teaches us the importance of being grateful not only for our own blessings but also for the blessings bestowed upon our loved ones.

When we reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Quranic verses, we realize that gratitude is a fundamental aspect of our faith. It is a means of strengthening our relationship with Allah and seeking His pleasure. By expressing gratitude, we acknowledge that all blessings come from Allah and recognize His infinite mercy and generosity.

Moreover, gratitude has a transformative effect on our lives. It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have been blessed with. Conversely, ingratitude and a lack of appreciation for the blessings in our lives can lead to spiritual and emotional impoverishment. It can breed discontentment, envy, and a sense of entitlement. The Quran warns us against ingratitude, as it distances us from the mercy and blessings of Allah.

Gratitude serves as a shield from adversities and strengthens our connection with Allah.
