(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إنَّكَ إنْ أدبَرْتَ عَنِ الدُّنْيا أقْبَلْتَ۔

This can be translated as,

Indeed, when you turn your back on this world, you have approached [the Hereafter].

Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (adabarta) "أدبَرْتَ" in the Hadith refers to turning one's back or moving away from something. In this context, it signifies turning away from the worldly attachments and distractions. The word (ad-dunya) "الدُّنْيا" refers to the temporal world, which encompasses material possessions, desires, and worldly pursuits. It is a reminder for Muslims to detach themselves from the allure of this transient world and focus on the eternal life of the Hereafter.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of turning away from the worldly distractions and focusing on the Hereafter. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77),

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse highlights the balance that Muslims should strive for. While it is essential to focus on the Hereafter, we should not neglect our responsibilities and duties in this world. We are encouraged to seek the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in both realms, while avoiding corruption and wrongdoing.

Another relevant verse is found in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:64), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

This verse serves as a reminder that the pleasures and distractions of this world are temporary and fleeting. The true and everlasting life is the Hereafter. Muslims should not become engrossed in the pursuit of worldly desires, but rather focus on preparing for the eternal life that awaits them.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in the Hadith highlights the significance of detaching oneself from the worldly distractions. When a person turns their back on the materialistic pursuits and worldly attachments, they are essentially turning towards the Hereafter. This act of detachment signifies a shift in priorities and a recognition of the true purpose of life.

By prioritizing the Hereafter, Muslims are motivated to engage in acts of worship, seek knowledge, and strive for righteousness. They are driven by the desire to attain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and secure their place in the eternal abode. This shift in focus brings about a transformation in their actions, intentions, and overall outlook on life.

The consequences of turning away from the world and approaching the Hereafter are profound. Muslims who prioritize the Hereafter are more likely to engage in acts of charity, kindness, and justice. They are less inclined to be consumed by greed, materialism, and selfishness. This shift in mindset leads to a more balanced and fulfilling life, both in this world and the Hereafter.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded of the impermanence of this world and the importance of focusing on the eternal life to come. It serves as a call to action for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual growth, seek knowledge, and engage in acts of worship. By turning away from the distractions of this world, we can approach the Hereafter with sincerity, devotion, and a steadfast commitment to righteousness.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to detach ourselves from the allure of this world and prioritize the Hereafter. May He guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us success in both realms. And may peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
