ما ترَكَ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ أمْراً سُدىً فَيَلْغُوَ۔
Allah, the Glorified, does not abandon anything to futility thereby rendering it void.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Allah And His Attributes)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما ترَكَ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ أمْراً سُدىً فَيَلْغُوَ۔
This Hadith highlights the fact that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not abandon or neglect any matter, leaving it to futility or purposelessness.
To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, we must delve into the meanings of its key words. The word (taraka) "ترَكَ" means to abandon or leave something behind. (Allah) "اللّهُ" refers to the Almighty, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. (amran) "أمْراً" signifies a matter, affair, or command. (sudan) "سُدىً" denotes futility, vanity, or purposelessness. And finally, (fayalghuwa) "فَيَلْغُوَ" means to render something void or in vain.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we find numerous Quranic verses that emphasize the wisdom and purposefulness of Allah's actions. For instance, in Surah Al-An'am (6:59), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
This verse highlights the comprehensive knowledge of Allah, who is aware of every detail and occurrence in the universe. It affirms that nothing happens without purpose or meaning, as even the falling of a leaf is known to Him. This understanding aligns with the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), as it emphasizes that Allah does not abandon any matter to futility, ensuring that everything has a purpose and is not rendered void.
Another verse that supports this exegesis is found in Surah Al-Qamar (54:49), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Indeed, all things We created with predestination.
This verse asserts that everything in the universe has been created with a predetermined purpose and destiny. It reinforces the idea that Allah does not leave anything to chance or purposelessness, further affirming the message of the Hadith.
Reflecting on the connotation of this Hadith, we realize that it serves as a reminder of Allah's infinite wisdom and knowledge. It assures us that every aspect of our existence, both in the physical and spiritual realms, is purposeful and meaningful. This understanding instills a sense of purpose and direction in our lives, as we recognize that nothing is in vain or futile.
Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that Allah does not abandon any matter to futility. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us as Muslims to seek knowledge, reflect upon the signs of Allah in the universe, and strive to understand His divine wisdom.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not abandon any matter to futility, ensuring that everything has a purpose and is not rendered void. This understanding is supported by Quranic verses that highlight Allah's comprehensive knowledge and the predestination of all things. Reflecting on this Hadith reminds us of the wisdom and purposefulness of Allah's actions and encourages us to seek knowledge and understanding. May Allah guide us to comprehend His divine wisdom and live our lives in accordance with His purpose.
