أحْمَقُ الْحُمْقِ الاِغْتِرارُ۔
The height of foolishness is being beguiled [by the pleasures of this world].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Foolishness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The height of foolishness is being beguiled [by the pleasures of this world].
The word used in this Hadith that requires our attention is (ightirar) "اِغْتِرارُ", which can be translated as "being beguiled" or "being deceived." This word carries the connotation of being captivated or entrapped by something that is ultimately deceptive and fleeting.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this statement of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
This verse highlights the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and the illusion they create. The pursuit of material possessions, wealth, and worldly desires can easily lead one astray from the true purpose of life. The Quran further emphasizes this in Surah Al-Imran (3:185),
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the height of foolishness, which is to be deceived by the allurements of this world. He reminds us that attaching ourselves too strongly to worldly pleasures can blind us from the reality of our existence and the ultimate purpose of our creation. Instead of being captivated by the temporary and fleeting pleasures, we should focus on the eternal rewards of the hereafter.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual growth and seek closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rather than being consumed by the materialistic pursuits of this world. It encourages us to reflect upon the consequences of being beguiled by worldly pleasures, which can lead to a neglect of our duties towards Allah and our fellow human beings.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true wisdom lies in recognizing the temporary nature of this world and striving for the eternal rewards of the hereafter. By resisting the temptations of this world and focusing on our spiritual growth, we can attain true success and fulfillment. This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith and to constantly evaluate their priorities in light of the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize the true nature of this world and guide us on the path of righteousness. May we be protected from the deception of worldly pleasures and be granted success in both this life and the hereafter.
