اَلصَّبْرُ عَوْنٌ عَلى كُلِّ أمْر۔
Patience is an aide in every affair.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الصَّبْرُ عَوْنٌ عَلى كُلِّ أمْر۔
This can be translated as,
Patience is an aide in every affair.
This impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of patience in all aspects of our lives.
The word (sabr) "صَبْرُ" in Arabic refers to patience, endurance, and steadfastness. It is a quality that allows us to remain calm and composed in the face of difficulties, trials, and tribulations. It is not a passive state of acceptance, but rather an active virtue that empowers us to persevere and overcome challenges.
To understand the importance of patience, we can turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes its significance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:45)
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]
This verse highlights the connection between patience and seeking assistance from Allah. It reminds us that patience is not only a personal attribute but also a means to seek Allah's guidance and support.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, Allah states, (Quran 3:200)
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful
This verse encourages believers to cultivate patience and steadfastness in their lives, emphasizing that success comes to those who remain patient and fear Allah.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that patience is not limited to specific situations but is applicable to every aspect of our lives. Whether it is facing personal challenges, dealing with difficult people, or enduring hardships in our work or studies, patience is an essential tool that helps us navigate through life's trials.
For example, when faced with adversity, patience allows us to maintain a positive mindset and find solutions to our problems. It prevents us from reacting impulsively or making hasty decisions that we may regret later. Patience also enables us to maintain healthy relationships by avoiding conflicts and resolving differences with wisdom and understanding.
Moreover, patience is not only beneficial in worldly affairs but also holds great rewards in the hereafter. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah promises, (Quran 2:153)
Indeed, Allah is with the patient
This verse assures us that Allah is always by the side of those who exercise patience, providing them with divine support and guidance.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate patience in their lives. It encourages us to seek strength from Allah and rely on His guidance in all situations. By practicing patience, we can navigate through life's challenges with grace and resilience, ultimately leading to success in this world and the hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that patience is not only a virtue but also a practical tool that aids us in every aspect of our lives. It is a quality that allows us to remain steadfast, seek Allah's assistance, and navigate through difficulties with wisdom and grace. By embodying patience, we can attain success in this world and the eternal rewards of the hereafter. May Allah grant us the strength to cultivate patience and seek His guidance in all our affairs.
