(Ghurar al-Hikam: Keeping Promises And Fulfilling Pledges)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Verily fulfilling promises is part of faith.

This enlightening saying emphasizes the importance of keeping one's promises and fulfilling commitments, as it is an integral part of one's faith.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this hadith. The word (husn) "حُسْنَ" means goodness or excellence, while (al-'ahd) "العَهْدِ" refers to a promise or covenant. The word (mina) "مِنَ" means "from" or "part of," and (al-iman) "الإيمانِ" translates to faith. Therefore, the hadith can be understood as

Verily, goodness in fulfilling promises is part of faith.

To further comprehend the significance of this hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of fulfilling promises in several verses. In Surah Al-Isra (17:34), Allah says,

And fulfill every commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

This verse highlights the accountability we have for fulfilling our promises, as we will be questioned about them on the Day of Judgment.

Another verse that sheds light on the importance of fulfilling promises is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1):

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse emphasizes the obligation upon believers to honor their commitments and fulfill their contracts, including promises made to others.

The consequences of not fulfilling promises can have far-reaching effects. It erodes trust, damages relationships, and undermines the fabric of society. When individuals fail to uphold their promises, it creates a sense of uncertainty and instability. On the other hand, when promises are kept, it builds trust, strengthens bonds, and fosters a harmonious environment.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, emphasizes the connection between fulfilling promises and faith. By fulfilling our commitments, we demonstrate our trustworthiness and integrity, qualities that are essential for a believer. It reflects the strength of our faith and our dedication to upholding the values and principles of Islam.

Furthermore, fulfilling promises extends beyond our interactions with others. It also encompasses our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we make a promise to Allah, such as fulfilling our obligations in prayer, fasting, or giving in charity, it is imperative that we fulfill them with sincerity and devotion. By doing so, we strengthen our connection with our Creator and deepen our faith.

In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of fulfilling promises as an integral part of our faith. It reminds us of the accountability we have for our commitments and the consequences of failing to uphold them. By fulfilling our promises, we demonstrate our trustworthiness, strengthen relationships, and uphold the values of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to fulfill our promises and strengthen our faith.
