ما أكْثَرَ العِبَرَ وأقَلَّ الاِعْتِبارَ۔
How many the lessons are, and how few of them are learnt!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما أكْثَرَ العِبَرَ وأقَلَّ الاِعْتِبارَ۔
This Hadith can be translated into English as,
How many the lessons are, and how few of them are learnt!
This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the abundance of lessons and teachings available to us, yet the scarcity of people who truly understand and apply them in their lives.
Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith. The word (ibar) "عِبَرَ" refers to lessons or moral teachings that can be derived from various experiences, events, or situations. These lessons serve as a means of guidance and enlightenment for individuals. On the other hand, the word (i'tibar) "اِعْتِبارَ" means to reflect upon, ponder, or take heed of these lessons.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is drawing our attention to the fact that there are countless lessons and insights available to us in our daily lives. Every experience, whether it be a success or a failure, holds valuable lessons that can shape our character and guide us towards righteousness. However, despite the abundance of these lessons, it is disheartening to witness how few people actually take the time to reflect upon them and learn from them.
To further emphasize the importance of learning from these lessons, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:21),
If We had sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.
This verse highlights the power of the Quran to humble even the strongest of creations, the mountains. It serves as a reminder to us, as Muslims, that we should reflect upon the teachings of the Quran and allow them to transform our hearts and minds.
Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:68), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Do they not ponder over the Word (of Allah), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their forefathers of old?
This verse encourages us to reflect upon the Quran and the lessons it contains. It questions those who neglect to ponder over the divine guidance and reminds us of the importance of learning from the experiences of those who came before us.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a wake-up call for Muslims to actively seek knowledge and wisdom from the lessons that surround us. It urges us to be mindful of the experiences we encounter and to extract valuable insights from them. By doing so, we can grow spiritually, morally, and intellectually.
The consequences of neglecting to learn from these lessons are significant. Without reflection and introspection, we risk repeating the same mistakes and falling into the same pitfalls. We miss out on opportunities for personal growth and fail to fulfill our potential as individuals and as a community. Furthermore, by disregarding the lessons available to us, we distance ourselves from the divine guidance and wisdom that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us through the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to actively seek knowledge and wisdom from the lessons that surround us. It highlights the abundance of lessons available to us and the importance of reflecting upon them. By doing so, we can grow spiritually, morally, and intellectually, and avoid repeating the same mistakes. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to learn from the lessons of life and apply them in our journey towards Him.
