رُكُوبُ الأهْوالِ يَكْسِبُ الأمْوالَ۔
Embarking on the terrifying [and surmounting one’s fears] brings wealth.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Earnings)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
رُكُوبُ الأهْوالِ يَكْسِبُ الأمْوالَ۔
This can be translated as,
Embarking on the terrifying [and surmounting one’s fears] brings wealth.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (rukub) "رُكُوبُ" refers to embarking or riding, while (al-ahwal) "الأهْوالِ" signifies the terrifying or fearful situations. And (yaksibu) "يَكْسِبُ" means to earn or acquire, and (al-amwal) "الأمْوالَ" refers to wealth or riches.
To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:60), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows.
This verse highlights the importance of being prepared and embarking on the terrifying situations in order to defend the truth and confront the enemies of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:186), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures the believers,
You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination.
This verse emphasizes that facing trials and tribulations is an inevitable part of life. By confronting these challenges with patience and fear of Allah, we can earn His blessings and rewards.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement encourages us to not shy away from difficult situations, but rather to face them head-on. It teaches us that by confronting our fears and overcoming obstacles, we can attain wealth, not only in material terms but also in terms of spiritual growth and success.
For instance, when we confront our fears of public speaking, we may gain the confidence to express our ideas and make a positive impact on others. When we face the fear of failure, we may discover new opportunities and achieve success in our endeavors. By embracing the challenges that come our way, we can develop resilience, perseverance, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
Moreover, this Hadith reminds us of the importance of seeking knowledge and expanding our horizons. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was renowned for his vast knowledge and wisdom. He faced numerous challenges throughout his life, including political turmoil and battles, yet he never hesitated to confront these difficulties. His unwavering commitment to the truth and his fearlessness in the face of adversity earned him immense respect and admiration.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the significance of embracing and surmounting our fears and challenges. By doing so, we can acquire not only material wealth but also spiritual growth and success. It encourages us to be courageous, persistent, and steadfast in our pursuit of truth and righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to face our fears and overcome the obstacles on our path, and may He bless us with true wealth in this life and the hereafter.
