هُدِيَ مَنْ أطاعَ رَبَّهُ وخافَ ذَنْبَهُ۔
Guided is the one who obeys his Lord and fears his sins.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obedience And Compliance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
هُدِيَ مَنْ أطاعَ رَبَّهُ وخافَ ذَنْبَهُ۔
This can be translated as:
Guided is the one who obeys his Lord and fears his sins.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (hudiya) "هُدِيَ" in this Hadith means "guided" or "led." It signifies that the one who follows the commands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and remains conscious of their own sins is on the path of guidance. This guidance is not only a spiritual state but also a practical way of life that leads to success in this world and the hereafter.
The word (ata'a) "أطاعَ" means "to obey" or "to comply with." It emphasizes the importance of adhering to the commands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as revealed in the Quran and exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Obedience to Allah's commands is a fundamental aspect of faith and a means to attain His pleasure and guidance.
The word (rabbahu) "رَبَّهُ" refers to "his Lord." It reminds us of the sovereignty and authority of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over all creation. It highlights the significance of recognizing and submitting to the ultimate source of guidance and wisdom.
The word (khaafa) "خافَ" means "to fear" or
to be conscious of.
It signifies a deep sense of awareness and humility in the face of one's own sins and shortcomings. This fear is not a paralyzing fear, but rather a motivating force that drives a person to seek forgiveness, repentance, and self-improvement.
The word (dhanbahu) "ذَنْبَهُ" refers to "his sins." It encompasses all actions, thoughts, and intentions that go against the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Fearing one's sins is a reflection of a sincere and humble heart, aware of its own weaknesses and constantly striving to rectify them.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:29),
O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
This verse emphasizes the correlation between fearing Allah and being guided. When a person fears Allah and is conscious of their sins, they are granted a criterion to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. This criterion enables them to make wise decisions and avoid falling into the traps of sin and temptation.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us in Surah Al-Talaq (65:2-3),
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
These verses highlight the blessings and provisions that Allah bestows upon those who fear Him. When a person sincerely fears Allah and seeks His guidance, Allah opens doors of relief and sustenance for them, even in the most unexpected ways. This is a manifestation of Allah's mercy and His promise to fulfill the needs of those who rely on Him.
In light of these Quranic teachings, we can understand that the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah and the fear of one's own sins. By obeying Allah's commands and remaining conscious of our actions, we are guided towards righteousness and protected from the pitfalls of sin and disobedience.
This guidance leads to a life of purpose, contentment, and success in both this world and the hereafter. It enables us to make choices that align with the teachings of Islam and to seek forgiveness and repentance when we falter. Ultimately, it is through this obedience and fear of sins that we attain closeness to Allah and His eternal guidance.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to obey Him, fear our sins, and be guided on the straight path. May He bless us with His mercy and forgiveness, and may He make us among those who are guided in this life and the hereafter.
