مِنْ مُطاوَعَةِ الشَّهْوَةِ تَضاعُفُ الآثامِ۔
Multiplication of sins stems from submission to lust.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مِنْ مُطاوَعَةِ الشَّهْوَةِ تَضاعُفُ الآثامِ۔
This can be translated as,
Multiplication of sins stems from submission to lust.
Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (mutawa'ah) "مُطاوَعَةِ" refers to submission or obedience, while (ash-shahwah) "الشَّهْوَةِ" refers to lust or desire. The word (tada'uf) "تَضاعُفُ" means multiplication or increase, and (al-atham) "الآثامِ" refers to sins or transgressions.
To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of succumbing to our desires in several verses. In Surah Yusuf, Allah says, (12:53)
Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy
This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil desires, which can lead to the multiplication of sins if not controlled.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Naziat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of following our desires blindly. He says, (79:40-41)
But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination, then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge
This verse emphasizes the importance of restraining our desires and seeking refuge in Allah to avoid the multiplication of sins.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in his profound wisdom, reminds us that when we submit to our lustful desires, our sins multiply. This submission can manifest in various forms, such as indulging in forbidden relationships, engaging in unlawful activities, or succumbing to the temptations of our lower selves. By giving in to our desires, we open the door to committing more sins, which distance us from the path of righteousness.
The consequences of multiplying sins are grave. They tarnish our souls, weaken our connection with Allah, and lead us further away from attaining His mercy and forgiveness. The more we indulge in our desires, the harder it becomes to break free from their grip. It creates a vicious cycle where one sin leads to another, trapping us in a web of disobedience.
To avoid this multiplication of sins, we must strive to control our desires and submit to the commandments of Allah. We should seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By nurturing our souls with knowledge, piety, and self-discipline, we can resist the temptations of our desires and protect ourselves from the multiplication of sins.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should evaluate our own lives and identify areas where we may be submitting to our lustful desires. It could be in the form of unlawful relationships, excessive materialism, or indulgence in forbidden pleasures. By recognizing these weaknesses, we can take proactive steps to overcome them and seek Allah's forgiveness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious of submitting to their lustful desires. By understanding the consequences of multiplying sins, we can strive to control our desires, seek Allah's guidance, and protect our souls from the destructive path of disobedience. May Allah grant us the strength to resist our desires and multiply our good deeds instead.
