(Ghurar al-Hikam: Near Relatives And Keeping Or Cutting Off Ties With Them)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "التَّجَنّي رَسُولُ القَطيعَةِ۔" This can be translated into English as:

False accusation is the messenger of severance of ties.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (At-Tajanni) "التَّجَنّي" refers to making false accusations or spreading baseless rumors about someone. It involves tarnishing someone's reputation by attributing false and harmful actions or qualities to them. (Rasul) "رَسُولُ" means messenger or envoy, and (Al-Qati'ah) "القَطيعَةِ" refers to the severance or cutting off of ties.

To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against spreading false accusations and rumors in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11:

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse emphasizes the importance of refraining from mocking or belittling others, as it can lead to the severance of ties and the breakdown of relationships. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us that we should not judge others based on our limited understanding, as they may be better than us in the sight of Allah.

Moreover, in Surah Al-Qalam, verse 10, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against spreading false accusations:

Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate judge, and He is fully aware of the truth. Therefore, it is not our place to falsely accuse or pass judgment on others. We should leave matters of judgment to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), who is the All-Knowing and All-Wise.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, warns us through this Hadith about the destructive consequences of false accusations. When we engage in spreading baseless rumors or false accusations, we not only harm the reputation and honor of others but also sever the ties of brotherhood and unity within the Muslim community.

False accusations can lead to mistrust, division, and animosity among Muslims. It creates an environment of suspicion and hostility, which goes against the teachings of Islam that emphasize unity, compassion, and forgiveness. The consequences of false accusations are far-reaching, as they can damage relationships, break families apart, and even lead to violence and bloodshed.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of guarding our tongues and being cautious of the words we utter. We must strive to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and truthfulness in our interactions with others. Instead of spreading false accusations, we should seek to build bridges of understanding, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of verifying information before accepting and spreading it. We should not be quick to judge or believe in baseless accusations, but rather seek the truth and give others the benefit of the doubt. By doing so, we can contribute to the preservation of unity, harmony, and peace within the Muslim community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the destructive nature of false accusations. It urges us to be cautious of the words we speak and the information we share, as they have the potential to sever ties and cause harm. By adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt, we can foster an environment of love, respect, and unity among Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to follow the path of truth and righteousness.
