(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

إنَّ مِنَ النِّعْمَةِ تَعَذُّرُ المَعاصِي۔

This can be translated as:

Verily the inability to commit sins is a blessing.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying. The word (ta'aththur) "تَعَذُّرُ" in the Hadith refers to the inability or the difficulty in committing sins. It implies a state where one is protected from the inclination and temptation to engage in sinful actions. This state is indeed a tremendous blessing from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand the significance of this blessing, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of avoiding sins and striving for righteousness. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says: (Quran 3:133)

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous.

This verse highlights the reward awaiting those who refrain from sins and seek forgiveness. It is clear that the inability to commit sins is a means to attain righteousness and ultimately, the eternal bliss of Paradise.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the consequences of succumbing to sinful desires: (Quran 11:113)

And do not follow the inclinations of those who have wronged, lest you be subjected to the Fire, and you would not have other than Allah any protectors; then you would not be helped.

This verse serves as a reminder that indulging in sinful actions leads to severe consequences, both in this world and the Hereafter. Therefore, the inability to commit sins is a safeguard against the harmful effects of disobedience and a means of protection from the punishment of Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the significance of this blessing. He reminds us that being unable to commit sins is not a limitation but a favor from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a state of purity and righteousness that allows us to live a life free from the burden of sin and its detrimental consequences.

This Hadith serves as a motivation for Muslims to strive for righteousness and to seek the protection of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) from the temptations of sin. It encourages us to purify our hearts and minds, to strengthen our faith, and to constantly seek the forgiveness and guidance of Allah.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that the inability to commit sins is not a state that is beyond our reach. It is a state that can be attained through sincere repentance, constant self-reflection, and a conscious effort to avoid sinful actions. It is a state that brings us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and allows us to experience the tranquility and peace that comes with a righteous life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the immense blessing of being unable to commit sins. It urges us to strive for righteousness, seek forgiveness, and protect ourselves from the harmful consequences of sinful actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to avoid sins and attain the ultimate reward of Paradise.
