إضاعَةُ الفُرْصَةِ غُصَّةٌ۔
Losing an opportunity is distressful.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opportunity And Its Loss)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "إضاعَةُ الفُرْصَةِ غُصَّةٌ۔" This can be translated as
Losing an opportunity is distressful.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran. The word (I'da'atu) "إضاعَةُ" refers to the act of losing or wasting something valuable. In this context, it signifies the loss of an opportunity. The word (al-fursah) "الفُرْصَةِ" refers to a chance or an opening that presents itself for a specific purpose or benefit. And finally, the word (ghussah) "غُصَّةٌ" means distress or sorrow.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities and not letting them slip away. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy.
This verse reminds us that every event in our lives, whether it is a trial or an opportunity, is predestined by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Therefore, when an opportunity arises, we must recognize it as a divine decree and act upon it.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse highlights the importance of utilizing time wisely and making the most of every opportunity. It reminds us that the true success lies in faith, righteous actions, and guiding others towards truth and patience.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, understood the significance of seizing opportunities. He recognized that every opportunity that comes our way is a chance for growth, improvement, and spiritual elevation. Losing such opportunities can lead to regret, sorrow, and a sense of missed potential.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and proactive in recognizing and utilizing the opportunities that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) presents to us. Whether it is an opportunity to learn, to help others, to seek forgiveness, or to engage in acts of worship, we should seize it with enthusiasm and gratitude.
Losing an opportunity not only deprives us of potential blessings and rewards, but it also hinders our personal growth and spiritual development. It is a missed chance to draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and fulfill our purpose in this world. Therefore, we must strive to be mindful of the opportunities that come our way and make a conscious effort to make the most of them.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we should ask ourselves: How often do we let opportunities slip away due to laziness, procrastination, or lack of awareness? Are we actively seeking opportunities for personal and spiritual growth? Are we utilizing our time and resources effectively to benefit ourselves and others?
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize and seize the opportunities that come our way. May He guide us to make the most of our time and resources in fulfilling our duties towards Him and our fellow human beings. And may He protect us from the distress of losing valuable opportunities. Ameen.
