مَنْ خافَ اللّهَ آمَنَهُ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْء۔
One who fears Allah is protected by Allah, the Glorified, from everything.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Fear)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who fears Allah is protected by Allah, the Glorified, from everything.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of having fear and consciousness of Allah in our hearts. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (khaafa) "خافَ" in Arabic means to fear or to be in awe of something. In this context, it refers to the fear and awe of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This fear is not a fear of punishment, but rather a fear of displeasing our Creator and a deep reverence for His greatness. It is a fear that stems from love and respect for Allah, knowing that He is the All-Knowing, All-Wise, and All-Powerful.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages us to have this fear of Him in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:197)
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (fear of Allah). So fear Me, O you of understanding.
Here, Allah emphasizes that the best provision for our journey in this world is the fear of Him. It is through this fear that we can attain true understanding and guidance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, Allah states, (3:102)
So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
This verse highlights the importance of fearing Allah to the best of our abilities. It is through this fear that we can attain success in this life and the Hereafter.
When we fear Allah and strive to please Him, we are promised protection from everything. This protection encompasses both physical and spiritual aspects. It means that Allah, the Glorified, will safeguard us from harm, calamities, and the evil that surrounds us. It also means that Allah will protect our hearts and souls from the whispers of Satan and the temptations of this world.
In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah assures us, (8:17)
And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He touches you with good - then He is over all things competent.
This verse reminds us that Allah is the ultimate protector and the only one who can alleviate our hardships. When we fear Allah and put our trust in Him, He will shield us from harm and guide us through difficult times.
Moreover, in Surah Yunus, Allah says, (10:57)
Indeed, those who fear Allah - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight.
This verse highlights that when we have the fear of Allah in our hearts, we are able to recognize the whispers of Satan and repel them. Our fear of Allah becomes a shield that protects us from falling into sin and disobedience.
The consequences of fearing Allah are immense. When we fear Allah, we become conscious of our actions and strive to live a righteous life. This fear motivates us to fulfill our obligations towards Allah and His creation. It drives us to seek knowledge, perform acts of worship, and engage in acts of kindness and compassion. Ultimately, this fear leads us to attain the pleasure of Allah and the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should ask ourselves: Do we truly fear Allah in our daily lives? Are we conscious of His presence and His commandments? Let us strive to cultivate this fear of Allah within ourselves, for it is the key to attaining His protection and blessings. May Allah grant us the ability to fear Him sincerely and protect us from all harm.
