Hadith #9355

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The vile one dons the attire of dishonour and harms the freemen.

Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. The word (la'eem) "لئيم" refers to someone who is vile, wicked, or ignoble. To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

From this verse, we understand that true honor lies in righteousness and piety. It is not based on wealth, lineage, or social status. The vile individual mentioned in the Hadith may appear to be honorable on the surface, but their true character is revealed through their dishonorable actions. They may deceive others by wearing the attire of respectability, but their inner corruption eventually becomes evident.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) also warns us in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2),

And do not let your hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.

This verse emphasizes the importance of justice and fairness, even towards those we may dislike or consider vile. The vile individual mentioned in the Hadith not only dons the attire of dishonor but also harms the freemen. Their actions are unjust and oppressive, causing harm to those who possess freedom and integrity.
