يَنْبَغي لِمَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَهُ أنْ يَلْزَمَ القَناعَةَ والعِفَّةَ۔
It behoves the one who knows himself to espouse contentment and chastity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
It behoves the one who knows himself to espouse contentment and chastity.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of two virtues: contentment (قَنَاعَة) and chastity (عِفَّة).
Contentment, or qana'ah, is the state of being satisfied and grateful with what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has provided, without constantly desiring more. It is the opposite of greed and materialism. The concept of contentment is beautifully illustrated in the Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) knows what is best for us and provides us with what we need. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to be content with His decree and trust in His wisdom.
Chastity, or 'iffah, refers to purity and modesty in one's thoughts, words, and actions. It encompasses the preservation of one's physical and spiritual integrity. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of chastity. In Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 5, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And they who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed.
This verse highlights the significance of maintaining chastity and avoiding any form of illicit relationships or immoral behavior.
Imam Ali's statement urges us to reflect upon our own selves and recognize the importance of these virtues. When one truly knows oneself, they understand their own weaknesses and strengths, their desires and temptations. This self-awareness should lead to a commitment to contentment and chastity.
By embracing contentment, we free ourselves from the constant pursuit of material possessions and worldly desires. We learn to appreciate and be grateful for what we have, rather than constantly yearning for more. Contentment brings inner peace and tranquility, as we are no longer consumed by the never-ending cycle of acquiring wealth and possessions. It allows us to focus on our spiritual growth and the pursuit of righteousness.
Chastity, on the other hand, protects us from falling into the traps of immorality and indecency. It safeguards our dignity and preserves the sanctity of our relationships. By practicing chastity, we demonstrate respect for ourselves and others, and we uphold the moral standards set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It helps us maintain a pure heart and a clear conscience, enabling us to lead a virtuous and honorable life.
The consequences of embracing contentment and chastity are far-reaching. They not only benefit us individually but also have a positive impact on society as a whole. Contentment helps to alleviate jealousy, envy, and greed, fostering a sense of harmony and unity among people. Chastity promotes healthy relationships, prevents the spread of diseases, and protects the institution of marriage and family.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's thought-provoking saying, we are reminded of the importance of self-awareness and the need to cultivate these virtues in our lives. By practicing contentment and chastity, we strive to align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to embody these virtues and attain His pleasure.
