— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Poverty)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لافَقْرَ مَعَ حُسْنِ تَدْبير۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

There is no poverty with good management.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (lafaqra) "لافَقْرَ" in this Hadith refers to poverty or destitution. It signifies a state of lacking material resources and being in need. On the other hand, the phrase (ma'a husn tadbir) "مَعَ حُسْنِ تَدْبير" means "with good management." It emphasizes the importance of proper planning, organization, and wise decision-making in order to overcome poverty.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) addresses the issue of poverty in the Quran and provides guidance on how to alleviate it. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 17:29)

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.

This verse highlights the importance of moderation and balance in managing one's wealth. It warns against both excessive spending and miserliness, as they can lead to financial difficulties.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, Allah states, (Quran 2:155)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse reminds us that trials and hardships, including financial challenges, are a part of life. However, those who remain patient and steadfast in their faith will be rewarded by Allah.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the role of good management in overcoming poverty. It highlights the importance of utilizing one's resources wisely, making sound financial decisions, and planning for the future. This Hadith encourages Muslims to be proactive in their approach to financial matters and to seek knowledge and skills that can help them improve their financial situation.

For example, a person who manages their income wisely by budgeting, saving, and investing in beneficial ventures is more likely to avoid falling into poverty. They will be able to meet their needs, fulfill their responsibilities, and contribute positively to society. On the other hand, a person who lacks proper management skills may find themselves in a constant state of financial struggle, despite having sufficient resources.

Good management also involves being mindful of one's spending habits and avoiding extravagance and wastefulness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against excessive spending in the Quran, stating, (Quran 17:26-27)

But do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.

By practicing moderation and avoiding unnecessary expenses, Muslims can ensure that their resources are utilized in a responsible and beneficial manner.

Moreover, good management extends beyond financial matters. It encompasses all aspects of life, including time management, decision-making, and prioritization. By effectively managing their time and energy, individuals can maximize their productivity and achieve their goals. This, in turn, can lead to personal growth, success, and a sense of fulfillment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of good management in overcoming poverty. It emphasizes the need for wise decision-making, proper planning, and responsible resource utilization. By following the guidance of the Quran and implementing these principles in our lives, we can strive towards financial stability and success. May Allah bless us with the wisdom and knowledge to manage our affairs in the best possible manner.
