اَلنَّزاهَةُ مِنْ شِيَمِ النُّفُوسِ الطّاهِرَةِ۔
Keeping away from sin is one of the traits of the immaculate souls.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remaining Pure And Free From Sin)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of (nazahah) "نَزَاهَة" which can be translated as
keeping away from sin
or
purity of the soul.
This Hadith highlights the significance of maintaining a pure and untainted character, free from the contamination of sins and vices.
The term (nazahah) "نَزَاهَة" is derived from the root word (nazaha) "نَزَهَ", which means to be pure, clean, and free from impurities. It signifies the state of being morally upright, virtuous, and untainted by sins. The word (nufus) "نُفُوس" refers to souls or individuals, and (at-tahirah) "الطَّاهِرَةِ" means the pure or immaculate ones.
This Hadith reminds us of the importance of striving for purity and righteousness in our thoughts, actions, and intentions. It encourages us to distance ourselves from sinful behavior and to cultivate a character that is free from moral blemishes. Let us now delve into the Quranic verses that support and further elucidate this profound teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the significance of purity and righteousness in several verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:157), Allah says,
Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.
This verse highlights the importance of following the Messenger (ﷺ) who enjoins what is right and forbids what is wrong. It emphasizes the significance of adhering to the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) and striving to stay away from sinful actions. This aligns with the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), which emphasizes the trait of purity and staying away from sin.
Another verse that supports the concept of purity and righteousness is found in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:3), where Allah says,
Who abstain from what is vain, abstain from all sins.
This verse highlights the importance of abstaining from futile and sinful actions. It encourages Muslims to stay away from anything that is devoid of benefit and to avoid engaging in sinful behavior. This further reinforces the teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) regarding the significance of keeping away from sin.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly strive for purity and righteousness in their lives. It encourages us to be conscious of our actions and to refrain from engaging in sinful behavior. By doing so, we purify our souls and strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
When we distance ourselves from sin, we protect ourselves from the harmful consequences that accompany it. Sin tarnishes our souls and weakens our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It leads to a sense of guilt, remorse, and spiritual degradation. On the other hand, maintaining purity and righteousness brings about tranquility, contentment, and a sense of closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, the trait of purity and staying away from sin is closely associated with the knowledge and wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His profound understanding of the Quran and his unwavering commitment to the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) enabled him to embody this trait to the highest degree. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) knowledge and wisdom served as a guiding light for Muslims, inspiring them to strive for purity and righteousness in their lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of purity and staying away from sin. It encourages Muslims to strive for righteousness in their thoughts, actions, and intentions. By distancing ourselves from sin, we purify our souls, strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and experience the blessings and tranquility that come with a pure and untainted character. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody this trait and to continuously seek His forgiveness and guidance.
