دَوْلَةُ الجاهِلِ كَالغَريبِ المُتَحَرِّكِ إلَى النُّقْلَةِ۔
The reign of an ignorant person is like a stranger who [soon] moves to another place.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
The reign of an ignorant person is like a stranger who [soon] moves to another place.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the transient nature and inherent weaknesses of the rule of an ignorant person.
Let us first delve into the important words of this Hadith. The word (dawlah) "دَوْلَةُ" refers to the reign or rule of a person. It signifies the authority and power held by an individual to govern and make decisions. The term (al-jahil) "الجاهِلِ" refers to an ignorant person, someone lacking knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) compares the reign of an ignorant person to a (gharib) "غَرِيبِ", which means a stranger or a foreigner. This analogy emphasizes the temporary and transient nature of the rule of an ignorant person. Just as a stranger is unfamiliar with a place and lacks a deep connection to it, an ignorant ruler lacks the necessary knowledge and understanding to effectively govern and make informed decisions.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge and wisdom in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant. It emphasizes that knowledge is a prerequisite for understanding and making informed decisions.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), Allah says,
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
This verse emphasizes that true guidance comes from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and that knowledge and wisdom are bestowed upon those whom He wills. It further emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from those who possess knowledge and understanding.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The reign of an ignorant person is characterized by a lack of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. Such a ruler is akin to a stranger who is unfamiliar with the land and its people. They lack the necessary insight and understanding to effectively govern and make informed decisions that benefit the society they rule over.
The consequences of having an ignorant ruler are far-reaching. Their decisions may be based on personal biases, whims, and desires rather than on sound judgment and knowledge. This can lead to mismanagement, injustice, and the neglect of the needs and well-being of the people. The lack of knowledge and understanding may also result in the inability to address complex societal issues and make informed policies that promote progress and development.
On the other hand, a knowledgeable and wise ruler, like Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), possesses the necessary insight and understanding to govern with justice and wisdom. Their decisions are based on a deep understanding of the principles of Islam and the needs of the people. They prioritize the well-being and welfare of the society they govern, striving to establish a just and equitable system.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder of the importance of knowledge and wisdom in leadership. It highlights the transient and weak nature of the rule of an ignorant person, emphasizing the need for leaders who possess knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. As Muslims, we should strive to seek knowledge, both religious and worldly, and support leaders who are knowledgeable and just, following the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the teachings of the Quran. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek knowledge and wisdom and guide us to leaders who govern with justice and wisdom.
