Truthfulness is the beauty of a human being and the column of faith.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Truthfulness is the beauty of a human being and the column of faith.
This amazing Hadith highlights the importance and significance of truthfulness in the life of a believer. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The Arabic word used in this Hadith for "truthfulness" is (الصِّدْقُ) "as-sidq", which refers to being truthful, sincere, and honest in one's words, actions, and intentions. It is a quality that reflects the purity of a person's character and the authenticity of their faith. The transliteration of "as-sidq" is "sidq".
To understand the significance of truthfulness, we can turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Tawbah, Allah says, (Quran 9:119)
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true
This verse highlights the association of truthfulness with righteousness and encourages believers to align themselves with those who are truthful.
Additionally, in Surah Al-A'raf, Allah mentions the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his encounter with Pharaoh. When Musa and his brother Harun (عَلَيْهِمَا ٱلسَّلَامُ) were sent to Pharaoh with a message from Allah, they were instructed to speak to him gently and with truthfulness. Allah says, (Quran 20:44)
And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]
This verse highlights the power of truthfulness in conveying the message effectively and creating a positive impact on the hearts of others.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states that truthfulness is not only a virtue but also the "column of faith." This phrase signifies the pivotal role that truthfulness plays in upholding and strengthening one's faith. Just as a column supports a structure, truthfulness supports and sustains the foundation of faith.
In the Quran, Allah describes the believers as those who are truthful in their faith and actions. In Surah Al-Ahzab, Allah says, (Quran 49:3)
Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah - they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward
This verse highlights the importance of truthfulness in one's relationship with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and how it is a sign of a sincere and tested heart.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun, Allah describes the qualities of the successful believers, and among them is the attribute of truthfulness. Allah says, (Quran 23:1-9)
Successful indeed are the believers, those who are humble in their prayers, and those who turn away from ill speech, and those who are observant of zakah, and those who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed - but whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors - and those who are to their trusts and promises attentive and those who are in their testimonies upright and those who [carefully] maintain their prayer
This passage emphasizes the comprehensive nature of truthfulness and its connection to various aspects of a believer's life.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize truthfulness in their interactions, as it not only beautifies their character but also strengthens their faith. By embodying truthfulness, a believer becomes a source of inspiration and guidance for others, just as Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble companions were.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of truthfulness in the life of a believer. It is a quality that beautifies one's character and serves as the pillar of faith. By being truthful in our words, actions, and intentions, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the example of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). May Allah grant us the strength and sincerity to embody truthfulness in all aspects of our lives.
