Action is the symbol [and an indication] of one’s interior.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-'amal 'unwānu al-tawīyah," which translates to

Action is the symbol [and an indication] of one’s interior.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of actions as a reflection of one's true character and intentions.

To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "Al-'amal" refers to actions or deeds, encompassing both physical and spiritual acts. It encompasses all that a person does, whether it be in the form of prayers, charity, kindness, or any other act performed for the sake of Allah. "Unwān" means a symbol or an indication, something that represents or signifies a deeper reality. And "al-tawīyah" refers to the interior or inner self, the hidden aspects of a person's character and intentions.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the wisdom behind this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes that true nobility and superiority lie in righteousness and piety, which are manifested through one's actions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:84), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And say, 'My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'

This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in all our actions, recognizing that our actions are a means of entering and exiting this world with righteousness and integrity.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that our actions are not merely superficial displays, but rather a reflection of our inner selves. It is through our actions that our true intentions, beliefs, and values are revealed. If our actions are rooted in sincerity, piety, and righteousness, they become a testament to the purity of our hearts and our devotion to Allah.

For example, if a person consistently performs their prayers, gives generously in charity, and treats others with kindness and respect, it indicates a strong connection with Allah and a genuine desire to please Him. On the other hand, if a person engages in dishonesty, backbiting, and cruelty, it reveals a corrupt interior and a lack of true faith.

This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to constantly evaluate their actions and strive for alignment between their inner selves and their outward behavior. It encourages us to be mindful of our intentions and to ensure that our actions are in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. By examining our actions, we can identify areas where we may be falling short and make a conscious effort to rectify our behavior. It reminds us that true change begins from within and is reflected in our actions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that our actions are not mere external displays, but rather a reflection of our true character and intentions. It reminds us to strive for sincerity, righteousness, and piety in all our actions, as they serve as a symbol of our inner selves. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to align our actions with our beliefs and intentions, and may He purify our hearts and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
