— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of persistence in performing actions that lead to salvation from the torment of Hellfire and the attainment of Paradise. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (thabiroo) "ثابِرُوا" in the Hadith means to persevere or be steadfast. It implies a continuous effort and determination in carrying out the prescribed actions. This word highlights the need for consistency and dedication in our worship and righteous deeds.
The phrase (al-a'mal al-mujibati lakum al-khalaas min an-nar wa al-fawz bil-jannah)
الأعْمالِ المُوجِبَةِ لَكُمُ الخَلاصَ مِنَ النّارِ والفَوْزَ بِالجَنَّةِ
refers to those actions that are obligatory upon us and have the potential to save us from the punishment of Hellfire and grant us success in attaining Paradise.
To understand the significance of persisting in these actions, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83):
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling our obligations towards Allah and towards our fellow human beings. It emphasizes the significance of prayer, charity, and good conduct. By persisting in these actions, we can strive to attain salvation from the torment of Hellfire and the ultimate success of Paradise.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:1-11). In these verses, Allah describes the qualities of the successful believers who will be granted Paradise. They are those who are humble in their prayers, who avoid vain talk and falsehood, who fulfill their trusts and promises, who guard their private parts, and who give charity. These believers are described as those who are steadfast in their actions, continuously striving to please Allah and seeking His pleasure.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to persist in performing these actions because they are not only obligatory but also have immense rewards. By consistently engaging in acts of worship, fulfilling our responsibilities, and showing kindness and compassion to others, we are not only safeguarding ourselves from the punishment of Hellfire but also increasing our chances of attaining Paradise.
Moreover, the Hadith reminds us that our actions are not isolated incidents but rather a reflection of our overall character and commitment to righteousness. It encourages us to develop a habit of continuously engaging in good deeds, as this consistency will shape our identity and ultimately determine our fate in the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of persisting in performing actions that lead to salvation from Hellfire and the attainment of Paradise. It reminds us to be steadfast in fulfilling our obligations towards Allah and our fellow human beings. By consistently engaging in acts of worship, fulfilling our responsibilities, and showing kindness and compassion, we can strive to attain the ultimate success of Paradise. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and perseverance to persist in these actions and bless us with His mercy and forgiveness.
