غايَةُ الفَضائِلِ العِلْمُ۔
The highest of all merits is knowledge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Virtues And Vices)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The highest of all merits is knowledge.
Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word "fada'il" in Arabic refers to virtues, merits, or excellences. It encompasses all the noble qualities and attributes that a person can possess. The word "ilm" means knowledge, which is the acquisition of information, understanding, and wisdom. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that knowledge is the pinnacle of all virtues, indicating its paramount importance in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Quran emphasizes the significance of knowledge in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who lack it. It emphasizes that knowledge elevates an individual's status and understanding.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse signifies that knowledge is a means of spiritual elevation and honor in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through knowledge that individuals are distinguished and granted higher ranks.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the immense value of knowledge. Knowledge is not limited to religious teachings alone but encompasses all fields of study and disciplines. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge, as both are essential for the betterment of individuals and society.
Knowledge serves as a guiding light in our lives. It enables us to understand the teachings of Islam, make informed decisions, and navigate through the complexities of the world. It empowers us to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood, and enables us to fulfill our obligations towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and humanity.
Moreover, knowledge is a means of personal growth and development. It broadens our horizons, expands our intellectual capacity, and enables us to contribute positively to society. It equips us with the tools to address challenges, find innovative solutions, and make a meaningful impact in the world.
The pursuit of knowledge is not limited to a specific time or age. It is a lifelong journey that requires continuous effort and dedication. The more knowledge we acquire, the more we realize how much there is to learn. This realization humbles us and instills a sense of humility, reminding us of the vastness of Allah's creation and the depth of His wisdom.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on knowledge serves as a motivation for Muslims to seek knowledge in all its forms. It encourages us to be curious, inquisitive, and open-minded. It urges us to explore the wonders of the universe, unravel the mysteries of science, and delve into the depths of spirituality.
The consequences of neglecting knowledge are detrimental. Ignorance leads to misunderstandings, misconceptions, and the perpetuation of falsehood. It hinders personal growth, stifles progress, and creates divisions within society. Without knowledge, individuals are susceptible to manipulation, exploitation, and the propagation of ignorance.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the paramount importance of knowledge. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge in all its forms. By seeking knowledge, we can elevate ourselves, contribute positively to society, and fulfill our obligations as servants of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and benefit from it.
