اَلبَغْيُ يَسْلُبُ النِّعْمَةَ۔
Oppression takes away blessing.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Oppression takes away blessing.
This beautiful Hadith highlights the detrimental consequences of oppression and the loss of blessings that result from it. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The Arabic word (baghy) "بَغْي" used in this Hadith refers to oppression, transgression, or wrongdoing. It encompasses any act that goes against the boundaries of justice and fairness. Oppression can manifest in various forms, such as physical, emotional, or financial abuse, as well as social, political, or economic injustices.
The word (yaslubu) "يَسْلُبُ" means to take away or deprive. It implies that oppression not only causes harm and suffering to the oppressed but also results in the loss of blessings. This loss of blessings can be understood as the removal of divine favor, mercy, and prosperity from the oppressor's life.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the gravity of oppression and its consequences. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against oppression and its detrimental effects. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 205, Allah says,
And when he turns away [from you], his effort in the land is to cause corruption therein and to destroy crops and livestock. And Allah does not like corruption.
This verse highlights how oppression leads to corruption and destruction in society. When individuals or groups oppress others, they disrupt the natural order and harmony established by Allah. The blessings of peace, stability, and prosperity are taken away as a result of their unjust actions.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Shura, verse 42, Allah states,
The recompense of an evil deed is its equivalent, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness and reconciliation instead of perpetuating oppression. By doing so, one can regain the blessings that were lost due to their previous wrongdoing.
The consequences of oppression are not limited to the material realm. In Surah Al-Anfal, verse 25, Allah warns,
And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
This verse reminds us that the consequences of oppression extend beyond this world. The oppressors will face severe punishment in the Hereafter if they do not repent and seek forgiveness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to abstain from oppressing others. It highlights the profound impact of oppression on both the oppressed and the oppressor. By engaging in acts of oppression, individuals not only harm others but also invite the loss of blessings and divine favor in their own lives.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can understand that oppression breeds a cycle of negativity and destruction. It creates a hostile environment where trust, compassion, and justice are compromised. Conversely, when individuals uphold justice, fairness, and kindness, they invite blessings and prosperity into their lives and communities.
As Muslims, it is our duty to stand against oppression in all its forms and strive for justice and equality. We must emulate the teachings of the Quran and the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his deep knowledge and commitment to justice. By doing so, we can ensure that blessings are preserved and that our actions align with the principles of Islam.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be just and compassionate individuals, and may He protect us from oppression and its consequences.
