قَدْ كَثُرَ الكِذْبُ حَتّى قَلَّ مَنْ يُوثَقُ بِهِ۔
Dishonesty has increased so much that there are only few who can [now] be trusted.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Important Events)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Dishonesty has increased so much that there are only few who can [now] be trusted.
This Hadith highlights the prevalence of dishonesty and the scarcity of trustworthy individuals in society. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (kathura) "كَثُرَ" in the Hadith refers to the abundance and increase of dishonesty. It signifies the widespread prevalence of falsehood and deception in society. This is a grave concern, as honesty and trustworthiness are fundamental values in Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in the Quran, stating in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8),
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
The scarcity of trustworthy individuals mentioned in the Hadith is a cause for concern. Trust is the foundation of any society, and when it erodes, it leads to chaos and instability. The Quran emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:8),
And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive.
Trustworthiness is not limited to fulfilling promises, but it extends to all aspects of life, including financial transactions, relationships, and responsibilities. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against betraying trust in Surah Al-Anfal (8:27),
O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].
The increase in dishonesty mentioned in the Hadith has dire consequences for individuals and society as a whole. When trust is broken, relationships are strained, and the fabric of society weakens. This erosion of trust affects all aspects of life, including business transactions, governance, and interpersonal relationships. It leads to a lack of cooperation, suspicion, and a breakdown of social cohesion. The Quran warns against the consequences of dishonesty in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:188),
And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to uphold the values of honesty and trustworthiness in their daily lives. It calls upon us to be vigilant against the prevalence of dishonesty and to strive to be among the few who can be trusted. We should be mindful of our words and actions, ensuring that they align with the principles of truthfulness and integrity. By doing so, we can contribute to the restoration of trust in society and the establishment of a just and harmonious community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the alarming increase in dishonesty and the scarcity of trustworthy individuals in society. It highlights the importance of honesty and trustworthiness in Islam and warns against the consequences of betraying trust. As Muslims, it is our duty to uphold these values and strive to be among the few who can be trusted. By doing so, we can contribute to the betterment of society and the establishment of a just and righteous community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of truthfulness and grant us the strength to be trustworthy individuals.
