قَد اعْتَبَرَ بِالباقي مَنِ اعْتَبرَ بِالماضي۔
He who takes a lesson from the past [that has gone] has taken a lesson for the remaining [future].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
قَد اعْتَبَرَ بِالباقي مَنِ اعْتَبَرَ بِالماضي۔
This can be translated as,
He who takes a lesson from the past [that has gone] has taken a lesson for the remaining [future].
This enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon and learning from the past in order to navigate the future successfully.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their implications. The word (ittabar) "اعْتَبَرَ" means to reflect upon, ponder, or take a lesson from. It implies a deep introspection and understanding of the events and experiences that have occurred. The word (bilbaqi) "بِالباقي" refers to the future or what is to come. It signifies the remaining time and opportunities that lie ahead. On the other hand, (bilmadi) "بِالماضي" refers to the past, the events and experiences that have already transpired.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse highlights the importance of reflecting upon our actions and their consequences, as they have an impact on our future. By taking a lesson from our past actions, we can make better choices and decisions for the remaining time we have.
Another verse that supports the essence of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-A'raf (7:176), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And if We had willed, We could have elevated him thereby, but he adhered [instead] to the earth and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs. So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.
This verse emphasizes the importance of learning from the stories and examples of those who came before us. By reflecting upon their experiences, we can avoid repeating their mistakes and make better choices for our own future.
Now, let us reflect on the impactful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. By taking a lesson from the past, we gain wisdom and insight that can guide us in the future. When we reflect upon our past actions, we become aware of the consequences they had and the lessons they taught us. This awareness enables us to make better choices and decisions for the remaining time we have in this world.
For example, if we reflect upon the mistakes we made in our relationships, we can learn to communicate better, show more empathy, and avoid repeating those mistakes in future relationships. If we reflect upon our past financial decisions, we can learn to manage our resources more wisely and make better investments for the future. If we reflect upon our past spiritual shortcomings, we can strive to improve our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His forgiveness and guidance.
The consequences of not reflecting upon the past are evident in history. Nations and individuals who fail to learn from the mistakes of the past often find themselves repeating those same mistakes, leading to disastrous outcomes. By taking a lesson from the past, we can break this cycle and pave the way for a better future.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of reflecting upon the past in order to navigate the future successfully. By learning from our past experiences, we gain wisdom and insight that can guide us in making better choices and decisions. The Quranic verses mentioned further emphasize the significance of reflecting upon the consequences of our actions and learning from the stories and examples of those who came before us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to take lessons from the past and make wise decisions for the future.
