— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ذاكِرُ اللّهِ مِنَ الفائِزينَ۔
This can be translated as,
The one who remembers Allah is from the successful ones.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran.
The word (dhaakir) "ذاكِرُ" in Arabic refers to someone who remembers or mentions Allah. It implies an act of remembrance, reflection, and devotion towards the Almighty. This remembrance can take various forms, such as reciting His names and attributes, engaging in supplication, pondering over His signs in nature, or simply maintaining a constant awareness of His presence.
The term (Allah) "اللّهِ" refers to the one true God, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and the sustainer of all existence. It is a name that encompasses all of His divine attributes and signifies His absolute uniqueness and oneness. Remembering Allah is an essential aspect of a Muslim's life, as it strengthens the bond between the servant and the Creator.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes the one who remembers Allah as being (min al-faa'izeen) "مِنَ الفائِزينَ", meaning from the successful ones. This highlights the immense significance and rewards associated with the act of remembrance. It indicates that those who engage in the remembrance of Allah are among the fortunate and prosperous individuals in this world and the hereafter.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of remembering Allah. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:152)
And remember Me; I will remember you. Be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
This verse beautifully illustrates the reciprocal nature of remembrance, where Allah promises to remember those who remember Him. It is a means of establishing a deep connection with the Divine and seeking His blessings and guidance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Jumu'ah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 62:9)
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
This verse highlights the importance of prioritizing the remembrance of Allah over worldly pursuits, emphasizing that true success lies in dedicating time and effort towards spiritual growth and connection with the Divine.
The act of remembering Allah has profound effects on an individual's life. It brings about inner peace, contentment, and a sense of purpose. It serves as a constant reminder of our ultimate goal in this world, which is to worship and seek the pleasure of Allah. The remembrance of Allah also acts as a shield against evil and temptation, as it strengthens one's faith and resolve.
Moreover, the remembrance of Allah is not limited to specific times or places. It is a continuous practice that should permeate every aspect of a Muslim's life. Whether it is during prayers, while engaged in daily activities, or in times of difficulty, the remembrance of Allah serves as a source of solace, guidance, and strength.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the immense significance and rewards associated with the remembrance of Allah. It is a means of attaining success in this world and the hereafter. By constantly remembering and mentioning Allah, we establish a deep connection with our Creator, seek His blessings, and strive towards spiritual growth. May we all strive to be among the successful ones by continuously remembering Allah in our hearts and actions.
