Deceive your heart into worshipping and be gentle with it (or do not compel it), and engage it [in worship] when it is free and lively, except for what has been prescribed as obligatory, for indeed that must be fulfilled [in any case].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of treating our hearts with care and gentleness in matters of worship. The Imam advises us to deceive our hearts into worshipping, which can be understood as motivating ourselves to engage in acts of worship even when we may not feel inclined to do so. This is a reminder that our hearts can sometimes be reluctant or distracted, and it is our responsibility to overcome these obstacles and strive towards the worship of Allah.
The Imam further advises us to be gentle with our hearts and not to compel or force them into worship. This highlights the importance of approaching worship with sincerity and love, rather than with a sense of obligation or compulsion. When we approach worship with gentleness and kindness, our hearts are more likely to respond positively and willingly.
To support this exegesis, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:286)
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear
This verse reminds us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and does not burden us with more than we can handle. Therefore, it is important for us to be gentle with ourselves and not to overwhelm our hearts with excessive acts of worship that may lead to burnout or discouragement.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 64:16)
So fear Allah as much as you are able
This verse emphasizes the importance of worshiping Allah to the best of our abilities, recognizing that our capacity for worship may vary from person to person. It is a reminder that we should not push ourselves beyond our limits, but rather engage in worship when we are able to do so with sincerity and enthusiasm.
The Imam also advises us to take advantage of the moments when our hearts are free and lively to engage in worship. This highlights the importance of being mindful of our internal states and utilizing them to enhance our worship. When our hearts are free from distractions and filled with energy, we should seize the opportunity to connect with Allah through acts of worship.
However, the Imam also reminds us that the obligations prescribed by Allah must be fulfilled regardless of our internal states. This is a reminder that certain acts of worship, such as the five daily prayers, fasting in Ramadan, and giving Zakat, are obligatory upon every Muslim and should be performed regardless of our personal inclinations or circumstances. These acts form the foundation of our faith and cannot be neglected.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of treating our hearts with care and gentleness in matters of worship. We should strive to deceive our hearts into worshipping, be gentle with them, and engage them in worship when they are free and lively. However, we must also fulfill the obligations prescribed by Allah, regardless of our internal states. May Allah guide us to worship Him with sincerity and love, and may He grant us the ability to care for our hearts in the pursuit of His pleasure.
