The worst choice is being satisfied with deficiency.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Choice)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The worst choice is being satisfied with deficiency.
This enlightening saying highlights the importance of striving for excellence and not settling for mediocrity. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.
The word (ikhtiyar) "اخْتِيَار" in Arabic refers to the act of making a choice or decision. It implies the exercise of free will and the ability to select from various options. The word (rida) "رِضَا" means satisfaction or contentment. It signifies a state of being pleased or accepting something willingly. Lastly, the word (naqs) "نَقْص" translates to deficiency or inadequacy.
When we analyze this Hadith, we understand that it warns against settling for less than what is optimal or ideal. It cautions against being content with a state of deficiency or inadequacy. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has created us with the potential for growth and improvement, and it is our duty as Muslims to strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of striving for excellence and avoiding complacency. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 20:131)
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
This verse reminds us not to be deceived by the temporary pleasures of this world and to focus on the everlasting rewards that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has promised. It urges us to seek the higher purpose in life and not settle for worldly gains that may lead to spiritual deficiency.
Another verse that aligns with the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qasas, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 28:77)
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
This verse encourages us to strike a balance between our worldly pursuits and our spiritual aspirations. It reminds us to utilize the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to seek success in the Hereafter. It warns against being satisfied with worldly gains alone, as that would lead to a deficiency in our spiritual growth.
Reflecting on the Hadith, we can understand that settling for mediocrity not only hinders our personal growth but also affects our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By accepting deficiency, we limit our potential and fail to fulfill the purpose for which we were created. It is essential for us as Muslims to constantly strive for improvement, seeking knowledge, and engaging in righteous actions.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. He exemplified the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of his life. His commitment to seeking knowledge, his unwavering faith, and his selfless service to humanity serve as an inspiration for Muslims of all generations.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of striving for excellence and not settling for mediocrity. It urges us to continuously seek improvement in our spiritual, intellectual, and moral dimensions. By doing so, we fulfill our purpose as Muslims and strive to attain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to always choose the path of excellence.
