اَلعِبادَةُ فَوْزٌ۔
Worship is [a means to] success.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Worship And The Worshipper)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العِبادَةُ فَوْزٌ۔" which translates to
Worship is [a means to] success.
In this beautiful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance and the ultimate purpose of worship in the life of a Muslim.
Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith. The word (al-'ibadah) "العِبادَةُ" refers to acts of worship and devotion that are performed with sincerity and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). These acts can include prayer, fasting, charity, pilgrimage, and many other forms of worship prescribed by Islam. The word (fawz) "فَوْزٌ" means success, triumph, or attainment of a desired outcome.
To understand the connotation of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:43)
And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].
Here, Allah emphasizes the importance of prayer and charity as acts of worship that lead to success. By fulfilling these obligations, Muslims not only strengthen their relationship with Allah but also contribute to the well-being of society.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 2:153)
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the power of prayer and patience in seeking Allah's assistance and guidance. It reminds us that through worship, we can find solace, strength, and success in times of difficulty and adversity.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that worship is not merely a ritualistic practice but a means to attain success in this world and the hereafter. When we engage in acts of worship with sincerity and devotion, we align ourselves with the divine will and seek closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This connection brings us peace, contentment, and guidance, leading us towards success in all aspects of our lives.
For example, when we perform the five daily prayers, we establish a direct connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His guidance and blessings. Through this act of worship, we develop discipline, mindfulness, and a sense of purpose. This, in turn, helps us navigate the challenges of life, make righteous decisions, and attain success in our personal and professional endeavors.
Similarly, when we engage in acts of charity, we not only fulfill a religious obligation but also contribute to the well-being of society. By helping those in need, we promote justice, compassion, and unity. These noble qualities are essential for building a harmonious and successful community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that worship is not a mere ritual but a path to success. Through acts of devotion and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we establish a profound connection with our Creator and seek His guidance and blessings. This connection empowers us to overcome challenges, make righteous choices, and contribute to the betterment of society. May we all strive to engage in sincere worship and attain true success in this world and the hereafter.
