Keeping ties with near relatives is from the best practices of the honourable ones.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Near Relatives And Keeping Or Cutting Off Ties With Them)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong bonds with our near relatives. The Arabic phrase (silat al-arham) "صِلَةُ الأرْحامِ" refers to the act of maintaining and nurturing family ties. This Hadith teaches us that this practice is not only virtuous but also a distinguishing characteristic of the noble and honorable individuals.
The significance of maintaining family ties is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:1):
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
This verse highlights the common origin of humanity and the importance of recognizing the bonds of kinship. We are all descendants of Adam and Eve, and our family ties connect us in a profound way. By maintaining these ties, we acknowledge and honor the natural bonds that Allah has created among us.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us in Surah Al-Isra (17:23-24):
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.'
These verses highlight the importance of treating our parents with kindness and respect. By extension, they also emphasize the significance of maintaining ties with our extended family, including our near relatives. Just as we are commanded to show kindness and respect to our parents, we are also encouraged to extend the same treatment to our relatives.
Maintaining ties with our near relatives has numerous benefits. Firstly, it strengthens the bonds of love and unity within the family. When we actively engage with our relatives, we create a sense of belonging and support. This fosters a positive and nurturing environment for all family members.
Secondly, maintaining family ties promotes social harmony and cohesion within the wider community. By nurturing these relationships, we build a network of support and cooperation that extends beyond our immediate family. This unity is essential for the well-being and progress of society as a whole.
Thirdly, maintaining family ties is a means of seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Allah has commanded us to honor our family relationships, and by doing so, we demonstrate our obedience to His commands. This act of worship brings us closer to Allah and earns us His blessings and mercy.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of maintaining family ties. His words serve as a reminder for us to prioritize these relationships and to actively engage with our near relatives. By doing so, we not only fulfill a religious obligation but also contribute to the well-being of our families and communities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that maintaining ties with our near relatives is a noble practice that distinguishes the honorable ones. This teaching is supported by various Quranic verses that emphasize the importance of family bonds and treating our relatives with kindness and respect. By nurturing these relationships, we strengthen our families, promote social harmony, and seek the pleasure of Allah. May Allah guide us to fulfill this important duty and bless us with strong and loving family ties.
