كُنْ فِي الدُّنيا بِبَدَنِكَ، وَفِي الآخِرَةِ بِقَلْبِكَ وعَمَلِكَ۔
Be in this world with your body and in the Hereafter with your heart and your actions.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Be in this world with your body and in the Hereafter with your heart and your actions.
This wise utterance emphasizes the importance of balancing our physical existence in this world with our spiritual connection to the Hereafter.
Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (your body) "بَدَنِكَ" refers to our physical presence and engagement in worldly matters. It reminds us that we are living beings with responsibilities and obligations in this temporal realm. We are encouraged to fulfill our duties and engage in the affairs of this world while maintaining a righteous and ethical conduct.
On the other hand, the word (your heart) "قَلْبِكَ" signifies our innermost being, our spiritual core. It represents our beliefs, intentions, and emotions. The heart is the seat of our faith and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We are reminded to nurture our hearts with love for Allah, seeking His pleasure and developing a strong relationship with Him.
Furthermore, the word (your actions) "عَمَلِكَ" emphasizes the importance of our deeds. Our actions are a reflection of our faith and intentions. We are encouraged to perform righteous deeds that align with the teachings of Islam and benefit both ourselves and others. Our actions should be driven by sincerity and the desire to please Allah.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:115),
Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us?
This verse reminds us that our existence in this world is not without purpose. We have been created for a greater purpose, and that is to worship and serve Allah.
In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety).
This verse highlights the importance of balancing our worldly needs with our spiritual obligations. While we are required to fulfill our material needs, the ultimate provision is the piety and consciousness of Allah that resides in our hearts.
The consequences of adhering to the teachings of this Hadith are profound. By being present in this world with our bodies, we fulfill our responsibilities and contribute positively to society. We strive for excellence in our professions, maintain strong family ties, and engage in acts of kindness and charity. However, we do not become attached to the material aspects of this world, recognizing that our true home is the Hereafter.
By being in the Hereafter with our hearts and actions, we prioritize our spiritual growth and connection with Allah. We engage in acts of worship, seek knowledge, and strive to purify our hearts from negative traits such as arrogance, envy, and greed. We understand that our ultimate success lies in the pleasure of Allah and the attainment of Paradise.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the example set by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His knowledge, wisdom, and devotion to Allah were unparalleled. He exemplified the balance between worldly affairs and spiritual pursuits, serving as a role model for Muslims of all generations.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a guiding principle for Muslims. It reminds us to strike a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual journey. By being present in this world with our bodies and in the Hereafter with our hearts and actions, we can lead fulfilling lives and strive for eternal success. May Allah grant us the ability to implement the teachings of this Hadith in our lives.
