Hadith #8796

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

القناعة تؤدي إلى العز.

This Hadith can be translated as

Contentment leads to honor.

Let us first delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (al-qana'ah) "القناعة" refers to contentment or satisfaction with what one has, without desiring more. It is the state of being pleased and grateful with Allah's blessings, regardless of the quantity or quality. (tu'addi) "تؤدي" means to lead or bring about, while (al-'izz) "العز" refers to honor, dignity, and respect.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:23),

That is because Allah is the Protector of those who have believed and because the disbelievers have no protector.

Contentment also protects us from falling into the traps of envy, greed, and materialism. It frees us from the constant pursuit of worldly desires, which can lead to dissatisfaction, anxiety, and unhappiness. By being content, we find peace within ourselves and are able to appreciate the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us.

Moreover, contentment leads to a sense of self-worth and confidence. When we are satisfied with what we have, we are not dependent on others for validation or recognition. Our honor comes from our relationship with Allah, not from the opinions or judgments of others. This inner strength and self-assurance radiate outward, earning the respect and admiration of those around us.
