لاتَجْعَلَنَّ لِنَفْسِكَ تَوَكُّلاً إلاّ عَلَى اللّهِ، ولايَكُنْ لَكَ رَجاءٌ إلاّ اللّهُ۔
Never allow yourself to trust in anyone but Allah, and you should have no hope in anyone but Allah.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Putting Trust In Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises Muslims to place their complete trust and hope only in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The key words in this Hadith are (tawakkul) "تَوَكُّلاً" meaning trust, and (raja) "رَجاءٌ" meaning hope.
The concept of tawakkul, or trust in Allah, is emphasized throughout the Quran. In Surah At-Tawbah, Allah says, (9:51)
And upon Allah let the believers rely
This verse highlights the importance of relying solely on Allah in all matters. Similarly, in Surah Ash-Shura, Allah says, (42:36)
And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die
emphasizing the eternal nature of Allah's support and help.
Furthermore, the Quran repeatedly reminds Muslims to place their hope only in Allah. In Surah Yusuf, Prophet Yaqub (peace be upon him) says, (12:67)
And I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed, Allah is Seeing of [His] servants
This verse exemplifies the unwavering trust and hope that believers should have in Allah alone.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance in this Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to not rely on anyone or anything in the same way they rely on Allah. Placing complete trust in Allah leads to inner peace and contentment, knowing that He is the ultimate source of all provisions and solutions. Having hope only in Allah cultivates a strong connection with Him and reinforces the belief in His infinite mercy and wisdom.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his deep knowledge and wisdom, imparts this advice to guide Muslims towards a path of spiritual enlightenment and reliance on the Divine. By internalizing the essence of this Hadith, Muslims can strengthen their faith, increase their patience during trials, and experience the true essence of reliance on Allah in all aspects of their lives.
Therefore, let us reflect on the profound wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to embody the essence of tawakkul and raja in our daily lives, seeking solace and hope only in the Almighty (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
