اَلمُجاهِدُونَ تُفْتَحُ لَهُمْ أبْوابُ السَّماءِ۔
The doors of the heavens are opened for those who strive [in the way of Allah].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Struggle (Jihad))
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The doors of the heavens are opened for those who strive [in the way of Allah].
This Hadith highlights the immense rewards and blessings that await those who engage in jihad, which refers to striving or struggling in the path of Allah.
The word "mujahidun" in the Hadith refers to those who actively participate in jihad. The term "mujahidun" is derived from the root word "jahada," which means to strive or exert effort. It encompasses various forms of struggle, including physical, intellectual, and spiritual efforts undertaken for the sake of Allah.
To understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 29:69)
And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes that those who strive for the sake of Allah will be guided by Him. It signifies that when individuals exert themselves in the path of Allah, seeking His pleasure and following His commands, He will assist them and open the doors of guidance for them. This guidance encompasses both worldly and spiritual matters, ensuring that the mujahidun are on the right path.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 22:38)
Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful.
This verse highlights that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protects and supports those who believe in Him and strive in His cause. It demonstrates that the doors of the heavens are opened for the mujahidun, as Allah Himself defends and safeguards them. This divine protection ensures that they are shielded from harm and granted victory over their adversaries.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims of the immense rewards and blessings that await those who engage in jihad. It motivates believers to actively strive in the path of Allah, whether it be through physical acts of worship, such as participating in defensive battles, or through intellectual and spiritual efforts, such as seeking knowledge, spreading truth, and combating falsehood.
The consequences of striving in the way of Allah are manifold. Firstly, it strengthens the individual's faith and connection with Allah, as they dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to His cause. Secondly, it serves as a means of purifying one's soul and attaining spiritual growth. By exerting effort in obedience to Allah, individuals develop self-discipline, patience, and perseverance.
Moreover, engaging in jihad enables Muslims to uphold justice, defend the oppressed, and establish peace. It allows them to protect their communities and preserve the values of Islam. By striving for the sake of Allah, Muslims contribute to the betterment of society and the promotion of righteousness.
Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the exemplary knowledge and wisdom possessed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His profound understanding of the Quran and his unwavering commitment to the teachings of Islam enabled him to convey such profound insights to the ummah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the rewards and blessings that await those who strive in the way of Allah. It encourages Muslims to actively engage in jihad, whether it be through physical, intellectual, or spiritual efforts. By doing so, they open the doors of the heavens and attain divine guidance, protection, and victory. May Allah grant us the strength and determination to strive in His cause and may He open the doors of the heavens for us.
