رَحِمَ اللّهُ امْرَءاً بادَرَ الأجَلَ، وأْحْسَنَ العَمَلَ لِدارِ إقامَتِهِ ومَحَلِّ كَرامَتِهِ۔
May Allah have mercy upon the person who anticipates death and performs good deeds for the abode of his [permanent] residence and the place of his dignity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of anticipating death and performing good deeds for the sake of our eternal abode and the preservation of our dignity. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (ajal) "أجل" refers to death or the appointed time of death. It signifies the inevitability of death and serves as a reminder that our time in this world is limited. The word (ahsan) "أحسن" means to do good or to excel in righteousness. It implies performing acts of virtue and righteousness to the best of one's ability. The word (dar iqamatihi) "دار إقامته" refers to the permanent abode, which is the Hereafter, where our souls will reside for eternity. Lastly, the word (mahall karamatihi) "محل كرامته" denotes the place of dignity, indicating that our actions in this world have an impact on our status and honor in the Hereafter.
To understand the significance of anticipating death, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mulk (67:2),
It is He who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed.
This verse highlights the purpose of our existence, which is to strive for excellence in our actions. By recognizing the certainty of death and the transient nature of this world, we are motivated to prioritize our deeds and invest in the eternal life to come.
The importance of performing good deeds is emphasized throughout the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is righteousness.
This verse reminds us that the best provision we can take for our journey in the Hereafter is the righteousness of our actions. By engaging in acts of kindness, charity, and worship, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to the betterment of society.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that our actions in this world have consequences in the Hereafter. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and protection in our journey through life. By performing good deeds and seeking His pleasure, we can hope for a noble entrance into the Hereafter and a dignified exit from this world.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that anticipating death and performing good deeds are interconnected. When we are conscious of the fleeting nature of life, we are motivated to make the most of our time by engaging in acts of righteousness. By doing so, we not only secure a place of honor and dignity in the Hereafter but also leave a positive impact on the world around us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the certainty of death and to strive for excellence in their actions. By anticipating death and performing good deeds, we prepare ourselves for the eternal abode and preserve our dignity in the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to live our lives in accordance with this profound teaching.
