Knowledge guides [one] to the truth.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العِلْمُ يَهْدِي إلَى الحَقِّ
which translates to
Knowledge guides [one] to the truth.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance and power of knowledge in leading individuals towards the path of truth and righteousness.
Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith by analyzing the key words. The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the acquisition of information, understanding, and awareness about various aspects of life. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The word (guides) "يَهْدِي" implies that knowledge serves as a guiding light, leading individuals towards the right path and helping them make informed decisions. And finally, the word (the truth) "الحَقِّ" signifies the ultimate reality, the divine truth that is in accordance with the teachings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran, the ultimate source of guidance for all Muslims. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and its role in leading individuals towards the truth. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant, emphasizing the superiority of knowledge in guiding individuals towards the truth.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:43), Allah states,
And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.
This verse emphasizes that true understanding and comprehension of the signs and examples presented by Allah can only be achieved through knowledge. It is through knowledge that individuals are able to discern the truth from falsehood and navigate the complexities of life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the transformative power of knowledge. Knowledge not only enlightens the mind but also purifies the soul. It enables individuals to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. By seeking knowledge, Muslims can gain a deeper understanding of their faith, strengthen their relationship with Allah, and navigate the challenges of life with wisdom and discernment.
Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a motivation for Muslims to continuously seek knowledge and never cease in their pursuit of truth. It encourages individuals to engage in lifelong learning, to explore various fields of knowledge, and to seek guidance from scholars and experts in their respective fields. By doing so, Muslims can equip themselves with the necessary tools to make informed decisions, contribute positively to society, and uphold the principles of justice and righteousness.
The consequences of neglecting knowledge are dire. Ignorance can lead to misunderstandings, confusion, and deviation from the right path. It can also make individuals susceptible to manipulation and exploitation. Therefore, it is incumbent upon every Muslim to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge and to seek guidance from reliable sources in order to safeguard their faith and navigate the complexities of the modern world.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Knowledge guides [one] to the truth
emphasizes the transformative power of knowledge in leading individuals towards the path of truth and righteousness. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to continuously seek knowledge, to explore various fields of knowledge, and to seek guidance from reliable sources.
