Hadith #4392

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أجْمِلُوا فِي الطَّلَبِ، فَكَمْ مِنْ حَريص خائب،و مُجْمِل لَم يَخِبْ۔

This can be translated as,

Be moderate in what you seek, for how many greedy people have been disappointed and how many who are moderate have not been unsuccessful!

In this thought-provoking Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to adopt a moderate approach in their pursuits and desires. The word (ajmilu) "أجْمِلُوا" means to be moderate or balanced, while (at-talab) "الطَّلَبِ" refers to seeking or pursuing something. And thus We have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25), Allah reminds us,

We sent aforetime our messengers with clear signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance, that people may stand forth in justice.

Here, the concept of balance is emphasized, indicating that moderation is an essential aspect of justice.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for Muslims to avoid excessive greed and ambition. Greed can lead to disappointment and dissatisfaction, as one's desires may never be fully fulfilled. On the other hand, those who adopt a moderate approach are more likely to find contentment and success in their endeavors.

For example, let us consider the pursuit of wealth. Islam encourages Muslims to seek sustenance and provide for their families, but it also warns against excessive attachment to material possessions. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse teaches us to seek a balanced livelihood, neither neglecting our worldly responsibilities nor becoming consumed by the pursuit of wealth.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice also applies to other aspects of life, such as seeking knowledge, maintaining relationships, and practicing religion. By adopting a moderate approach, we can avoid the pitfalls of extremism and find success and contentment in all areas of our lives.
