هُدِيَ مَنِ ادَّرَعَ لِباسَ الصَّبْرِ واليَقينِ۔
The one who wears the garment of piety and certitude is [truly] guided.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The one who wears the garment of piety and certitude is [truly] guided.
This profound statement highlights the importance of two fundamental qualities in a believer's life: piety (sabr) and certitude (yaqeen).
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. "Ad-dara'a" refers to a garment or clothing, symbolizing something that covers and adorns a person. "As-sabr" is commonly translated as patience, but it encompasses much more. It refers to steadfastness, endurance, and self-control in the face of difficulties and trials. "Al-yaqeen" means certainty or conviction, indicating a deep-rooted belief that is unwavering and unshakable.
To understand the significance of these qualities, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155),
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse emphasizes the importance of patience in times of hardship and trials. It is through patience that one can remain steadfast and guided on the right path.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15),
Indeed, the believers are only the ones who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
This verse highlights the significance of certitude in the faith of a believer. It is through unwavering conviction and dedication that one can truly strive in the cause of Allah.
Now, let us reflect on the impactful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The
garment of piety and certitude
represents the qualities that adorn and protect a believer. Just as a garment covers and shields the body, piety and certitude safeguard the soul and guide it on the right path.
When one wears the garment of piety, they cultivate a sense of self-control and steadfastness in the face of challenges. They remain patient and content, knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is testing them for a greater purpose. This patience is not passive, but rather an active virtue that empowers the believer to face difficulties with resilience and trust in Allah's plan.
Similarly, the garment of certitude provides the believer with a strong foundation of unwavering belief. It is through this deep-rooted conviction that one can overcome doubts and uncertainties. With certitude, a believer is able to strive in the cause of Allah, dedicating their resources and efforts wholeheartedly.
The consequence of wearing this garment is guidance. When a Muslim adorns themselves with piety and certitude, they are guided on the straight path towards righteousness and closeness to Allah. They become beacons of light, illuminating the way for others through their actions and character.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound Hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to prioritize the cultivation of piety and certitude in their lives. By embodying these qualities, we can navigate the challenges of this world with patience and conviction. Let us strive to wear this garment and be guided on the path of righteousness, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all that we do. May Allah grant us the strength to embody these qualities and be among the guided ones.
