(Ghurar al-Hikam: God-Given Success)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ وُفِّقَ أحْسَنَ۔" which translates to

Whoever is granted success does good [work].

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims.

Let us analyze the key words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (wuffiqa) "وُفِّقَ" is derived from the root word (wafaqa) "وَفَقَ", which means to be granted success, to be enabled, or to be facilitated. It implies that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows His divine assistance upon an individual, allowing them to achieve goodness and righteousness.

The word (ahsan) "أحْسَنَ" means to do good or to excel in righteousness. It encompasses all acts of virtue, kindness, and piety. It emphasizes the importance of performing good deeds and striving for excellence in all aspects of life.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 148:

So, for each [religious following] is a direction toward which it faces. So race to [all that is] good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you forth [for judgement] all together. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.

This verse emphasizes the importance of hastening towards goodness and righteousness. It encourages Muslims to compete in performing good deeds, regardless of their geographical location or religious affiliation. It is a reminder that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will gather all individuals on the Day of Judgment and will judge them based on their actions.

Another verse that complements this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 61:

And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.

This verse refers to the mockery faced by Prophet Jesus (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and serves as a reminder that even the noblest of individuals faced opposition and ridicule. However, their success lay in their perseverance and commitment to doing good, despite the challenges they encountered.

From this Hadith, we learn that success is not merely measured by material achievements or worldly gains. True success lies in the consistent practice of righteousness and the pursuit of goodness. It is a reminder that every individual has the potential to do good, and it is through the divine facilitation and assistance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that we are able to achieve this.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of utilizing the opportunities and blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we are granted success, it is incumbent upon us to utilize it for the betterment of ourselves and society. It is a call to action, urging Muslims to actively engage in acts of kindness, charity, and righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true success lies in doing good and striving for excellence in all aspects of life. It is a reminder that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) facilitates and enables us to achieve goodness, and it is our responsibility to seize these opportunities and make a positive impact in the world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us success in our endeavors and guide us towards the path of righteousness.
