إنَّكَ لَنْ تَحْمِلَ إلَى الآخِرَةِ عَمَلاً أنْفَعُ لَكَ مِنَ الصَّبْرِ، والرِّضا، وَالْخَوْفِ، والرَّجاءِ۔
Indeed you will never carry any action to the Hereafter more beneficial than patience, satisfaction, fear and hope.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightens us about the actions that hold the utmost importance and benefit in the Hereafter. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions four key actions: patience, satisfaction, fear, and hope.
Firstly, let us delve into the meaning of these words. (صَبْر) "Sabr" translates to patience, which refers to steadfastness and endurance in the face of trials and tribulations. (رِّضَا) "Rida" means satisfaction, signifying contentment and acceptance of Allah's decree. (خَوْف) "Khauf" represents fear, which is the awe and reverence one feels towards Allah's punishment. And (رَّجَاء) "Raja" denotes hope, the optimistic expectation of Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
To understand the significance of these actions, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience, satisfaction, fear, and hope in various verses.
Regarding patience, Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153):
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the divine assistance that accompanies those who embody patience. Patience is a virtue that enables us to persevere through hardships, maintain our faith, and rely on Allah's support.
In terms of satisfaction, Allah states in Surah At-Tawbah (9:59):
And among them are those who criticize the Prophet and say, 'He is an ear.' Say, '[It is] an ear of goodness for you that believes in Allah and believes the believers and [is] a mercy to those who believe among you.' And those who criticize the Messenger of Allah - for them is a painful punishment.
This verse highlights the importance of being content with the Prophet (ﷺ) and his teachings. It reminds us that true satisfaction lies in embracing the guidance of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ).
Regarding fear, Allah says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18):
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse emphasizes the fear of Allah as a means of self-accountability and self-improvement. It reminds us to be mindful of our actions and their consequences, leading us to seek His forgiveness and mercy.
In terms of hope, Allah states in Surah Az-Zumar (39:53):
Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'
This verse offers solace and hope to those who have sinned, assuring them of Allah's boundless mercy and forgiveness. It encourages believers to maintain hope in His mercy and to seek His forgiveness sincerely.
Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that these four actions - patience, satisfaction, fear, and hope - are the most beneficial deeds for our journey to the Hereafter.
By practicing patience, we develop resilience and fortitude in the face of challenges, ensuring that we remain steadfast on the path of righteousness. Through satisfaction, we cultivate contentment with Allah's decree, freeing ourselves from the shackles of worldly desires and finding peace in His will. Fear of Allah keeps us conscious of our actions, preventing us from indulging in sinful behavior and motivating us to seek His pleasure. And hope in His mercy provides us with optimism and motivation to continuously strive for His forgiveness and paradise.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thoughtful words serve as a reminder to Muslims of the timeless wisdom and guidance found in the Quran. They encapsulate the essence of a righteous and balanced life, emphasizing the importance of patience, satisfaction, fear, and hope in our journey towards the Hereafter. May we all strive to embody these virtues and reap their benefits in this world and the Hereafter.
