حَصِّنُوا أنْفُسَكُمْ بِالصَّدَقَةِ۔
Safeguard yourselves through charity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Charities)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "حَصِّنُوا أنْفُسَكُمْ بِالصَّدَقَةِ" which translates to
Safeguard yourselves through charity.
This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of giving charity as a means of protecting oneself from harm and ensuring spiritual well-being.
The word (sadaqah) "صَدَقَةِ" in this Hadith refers to acts of voluntary giving and charity. It encompasses various forms of charity, including monetary donations, acts of kindness, and helping those in need. Sadaqah is not limited to giving money; it also includes giving one's time, skills, and resources for the betterment of others.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of charity and its benefits for the individual and society. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse highlights the immense reward and blessings that come from giving in the way of Allah. Just as a single seed can yield a bountiful harvest, the act of charity multiplies and brings forth abundant blessings for the giver. By safeguarding ourselves through charity, we not only protect our wealth and possessions but also cultivate a prosperous and virtuous society.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:274), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Those who spend their wealth [in Allah's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
This verse emphasizes the importance of giving charity both openly and in secret. It encourages Muslims to be consistent in their acts of charity, regardless of the time or circumstances. By doing so, they will be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and will be free from fear and grief. Safeguarding ourselves through charity not only brings material benefits but also grants inner peace and contentment.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims. By engaging in acts of charity, we strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and fulfill our duty towards our fellow human beings. Charity purifies our wealth, softens our hearts, and instills a sense of empathy and compassion within us.
Safeguarding ourselves through charity also has far-reaching consequences beyond our individual lives. It contributes to the betterment of society by addressing the needs of the less fortunate, promoting social justice, and fostering a spirit of generosity and solidarity. Through our charitable actions, we become agents of positive change and play a role in building a more equitable and compassionate world.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of safeguarding ourselves through charity. By giving in the way of Allah, we protect ourselves from spiritual harm, attain blessings and rewards, and contribute to the well-being of society. Let us strive to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) by engaging in acts of charity and fulfilling our duty towards our fellow human beings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the means and opportunity to give generously and may He accept our charitable deeds.
